Tastefully appointed; very tidy; friendly and helpful staff; extremely comfortable; somewhat compact rooms (it is Manhattan). We were on the street side on a Saturday night and did not notice the noise mentioned by other reviewers (I am a light sleeper and have trouble with traffic noise). Superb choice in a very convenient location.

I stayed one night at the historic Algonquin Hotel in midtown Manhattan. Located near Bryant Park, the hotel was built in 1902 and was renovated in 2012. It's best known for the "round table" in the restaurant where writers Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood met regularly, and were soon joined by others. These meeting led to the creation of "The New Yorker" magazine and influenced the writing of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.
Like moste New York hotels, the rooms are smaller than what you'd find in most American cities. Mine was about the size of a bedroom, with a double bed, night stands, small desk, arm chair, small dresser, and flat screen TV. There's a closet and bathroom with shower. For me, the size was reasonably comfortable. The shower stall was very narrow--about 2-1/2 feet wide, and a lot of water leaked out, drenching the bath mat. But other than that, I found the room clean and comfortable.
Being a historic hotel and in the heart of New York, though, the room is a reasonable size and met my needs. Theres an in-room thermostat to control the temperature, and complientary bottles of water. It's nicely decorated with modern Art Deco pieces, and even has built in book lights in homage to its literary fame. The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. I requested a quiet room and was given exactly that. The 7th floor room faced the alley, and apart from the occasional distant siren or door closing in the hall, it was very quiet. Probably the most quiet room I've ever had in NYC.

I would definitely stay here again.

The Algonquin is a wonderfully historic Hotel ideally located on 44th Street in midtown Manhattan. To know more about the history of this hotel all you need to do is a little internet research. I could go on forever on this topic alone, but let’s just say the place is rich with literary history and charm. Many of the famous writers in the earliest 20th century would hang out here. When you walk into the main lobby, you still feel the historic significance. That fact alone makes this property special. Although there is a resident cat still on premises, she is hard to find since she is now confined to only certain areas. The city made the hotel keep her away from some of the lobby areas (progress??!!)

I was here for business during the week and my wife joined me over the weekend for some NYC fun. The location is great in midtown. Walk out of the hotel and turn left for a few blocks and you are at Grand Central Station. If you walk out and turn right, you are just a few blocks form Times Square. The hotel is a great starting point for exploring the city.

The hotel was recently restored and is a Marriott “Autograph” Property. It has the feel of a small boutique hotel. The renovation did a good job of keeping the hotel’s “clubby” feel.

Our room was well appointed. Comfortable bed and nice bedroom. We had a flat screen TV and the A/C temperature was good. If I had one complaint it would be it was small. Really small. Even by NYC standards our room was small. I did not expect it to be that small. Oh well. I felt for the cost, I would have just a tad more room. Also, the drinks in the lobby bar and at the hotel bar next door (Blue Bar) were expensive by even NYC standards.

The service was great. Everyone from the door man, front desk, and housekeeping was polite, helpful and cheerful. Would I recommend a stay here or stay again? It actually would depend on the cost in relation to other places. Otherwise, it does make a great ”home” while in New York.

Greetings and thank you for taking time to comment on and provide feedback about The Algonquin. It is always gratifying to the team when we know someone has taken time to learn about the rich history of this 112 year old hotel that was guts to décor renovated in 2012. So many literary firsts took place here in the first half of the 20th Century that still live on today that are truly remarkable, most notable the founding of “New Yorker” magazine.

We appreciate your business and the time you took to write, please plan a return visit soon!

I have always wanted to stay at this hotel for the past two years. I finally saw a low rate so I booked the room. The hotel is very nice, you can tell it has class. It offers many amenities like a luxury hotel should. The rooms are very small but nice and clean. The bathroom was like a closet but its NYC, what do you expect?
It's in a prime location, so many restaurants in the area.

We stayed in the hotel early May for 5 nights with my husband and 2 girls (10 and 12 years). The location is perfect, the staff really helps you a lot with ideas where to go to, umbrella's, getting a taxi, room service, etc. We really got the max. out of our visit to New York!
We stayed in the suite and it was really big fun. The atmosphere of the hotel is great, personal contact, not too smooth, really charming and the beautiful cat Mathilda!
The location is perfect for Manhattan, you can easily walk to Central Park, Fifth avenue, Broadway, etc.

Room Tip: For family with children take the suite

For my Nieces 21st and Cousins birthday they wanted to go to New York. We booked the trip through Expedia and the Hotel its location and everything about it was lovely. The Cat made its appearance sometimes like lord or lady of the manor which I thought was a lovely idea.
The Bathroom with a Shower to die for was superb it really was.
Location just a couple of streets from Time Square also proved great too.
Comfy beds too. The only thing I did say to the receptionist was Foot Spas to hire would be a great idea as our feet were killing us after a couple of days. Or at least a bowl that you could fill to soak you feet in. We did not eat there so I cannot comment on the food, however my cousin did get a piece of cheesecake for her birthday with a card, fizzy water and some fruit which was a lovely touch. Would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone.
