“The Marx Brothers cartoon”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Going down the iron stairway I noticed the cartoons and there are may wonderful caricatures from the days of Dorothy Parker and her set. My favorite was the one of Harpo. The hotel is our history and staying in style makes it all the more fun.

Hello! We are so happy that you were able to connect with and be a part of The Algonquin’s 112 year history. The entire team believes that we create an authenticity that allows our guests to get a sense of what happened at 59 West 44th Street for the past 112 years, like the founding of ‘New Yorker” magazine in 1925 for example. The cast iron rails on our stairs are original to the building, refreshed and restored during the 2012 guts to décor renovation the stair treads are original while marble showing wear from years of use and scrubbing. At the same time we know our 21 Century touches and sophisticated décor create a complementary contrast for our guests to appreciate and enjoy. Please come back again!

This is a great hotel, lots of work has gone into maintaining its character. It is vibrant on entrance with friendly door, and reception staff. The bar and restaurant looks nice and they make an effort to show you Dorothy Parker's round table. And there are literary witicisms and sayings on all the room doors. The room we had was small but it is an old hotel, and there was plenty of room, and a huge closet to store cases etc in. The bed was really comfortable. The bathroom was compact to fit the space but there were nice touches like L'Occitaine toiletries. There are lots of grumbles about the lifts. We were not far from them but it is not at issue. Yes there is a bell but you are probably a light sleeper if you are kept awake by it. The wait for the lift at busy periods is more annoying! But you can take the stairs.

The staff here I met were really really friendly which was nice in New York where you can get some gruff responses at times. It is really well placed for the theatres and we walked most places in Manhattan from here.

We found a great deal for this hotel on LivingSocial and it worked perfectly into travel plans for a wedding we were attending just down the block. This hotel is an absolute gem. We stayed in a standard King Room - a lovely era decorated room, with a comfortable king sized bed, quaint layout of the room - and small but beautifully appointed bathroom that's just a step up from the room (a great touch), and a low-lighted black and white "painting" of a spot in NYC above the bed (that can be turned off for sleeping, if you'd like). The room has everything you want including an iron and luggage rack in the closet. There's also a work out room and coffee station on the 2nd floor, plus the Blue Bar and lobby/restaurant on the first floor. The common areas boast lovingly preserved wood appointments. We were lucky enough to get complimentary cocktails for 2 and complimentary continental breakfast for 2 with our deal, also. This was our most satisfying hotel stay in quite awhile at a great price which couldn't have worked out better for attending the wedding. Oh, and did I mention the amazingly friendly and helpful staff - or Matilda, the cat, who lives there too??!! This place is fabulous - deal or no special deal!!!

Greetings and thank you for taking time to share your comments about your visit to The Algonquin Hotel. We’re pleased you were able to take advantage of the special offer that was available for a limited time on the social site, Living Social, people have really appreciated the value that it offered to those who are site members and purchased the deal.
The Algonquin is in the heart of Midtown Manhattan as you know and convenient to everything New York. We are pleased you found our décor to be a tasteful blend of contemporary design with respect paid to the past. Our team is the real “jewel” in the Algonquin’s crown, they make memorable experiences for our guests every day.

Thank you for your business!

Spent the weekend here. Everything was superb. We had many choices of hotels but The Algonquin is classic, historic, elegant, and quintessentially New York and so the choice was made. Everything we wanted to visit was within walking distance. The staff was excellent, friendly, and welcoming. The room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The bathroom, albeit small, was modern and functional. Being Marriott Gold members, we got vouchers for breakfast each day, and with plenty of options, everything we tried was delicious (and pricey, so I'm glad we didn't have to pay for it, except for a $5 charge that we didn't understand). We were assigned a Queen room on the 8th floor in the back of the hotel and it was as quiet as could be. (I mean heard NO outside noise, except for an occasional siren.) The Blue Bar, off the lobby, was chic and the drinks were great. We got to meet Matilda, the hotel cat, and she is gorgeous. We really loved the ambiance of this place. I would definitely stay here again, and look forward to the day when I get to. My only (minor) complaint is there was no way to turn off the light in the closet.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back side of the hotel are quiet.

We booked this hotel as it was one of the few places near Times Square that guaranteed we would be all in one room - without the risk of no interconnecting rooms.
We had a one bedroom suite with dividing door. The kids had a sofa and pull out bed, with plenty of space to play.
The staff were very attentive.
Breakfast was one of the best we've ever had - and they happily exchanged vouchers on days we couldn't use to ones when we could.
Porters found us excellent cars for airport and others trips - not an easy task when there were 5 of us plus a massive bike box.
Would definitely recommend and use again.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th floor - other reviews cited the air con as noisy but if you have it on in the roo...

Greetings and thank you for your business which the Algonquin team appreciates. We are pleased you found our one bedroom suite to be comfortable for your family by using the sofa bed in the living room for the kids. Guests have told us for some time that the suite configuration is perfect for their family and with two televisions and a door between the rooms they offer a good amount of privacy. Some suites actually have additional connecting rooms too, so next time, and bring the rest of the family!

Thank you again for enjoying the historic and iconic Algonquin Hotel a part of Autograph Collection.

We stayed one night at the Algonquin Hotel. It was simply fabulous. The queen room was a little cozy but it did not matter. The feel of the history behind the hotel made up for the size of the room. The entire staff was wonderful. We were met at the door by very attentive staff who showed us the parking across the street - very convenient. The bellhop showed me to our room and gave me a good briefing about the room. Wonderful customer service, I sat in the lobby waiting for my companion and the bellhop showed him where I was sitting without being asked. That was very attentive, This mornings breakfast was pretty to look at and even better tasting, The hotel is located near Times Square which was also convenient. This morning I walked down the agree to catch a glimpse of Good Morning America. The entire experience was simply marvelous, I will definitely return for a longer visit.

Room Tip: I said on the front and loved the sounds of the city

Tastefully appointed; very tidy; friendly and helpful staff; extremely comfortable; somewhat compact rooms (it is Manhattan). We were on the street side on a Saturday night and did not notice the noise mentioned by other reviewers (I am a light sleeper and have trouble with traffic noise). Superb choice in a very convenient location.
