“A Wonderful Stay (however)”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Absolutely great location, South Central Park with great City view or park view.
The room we had was on the 46th floor, it was quiet and very clean.
The price was the best we found in the city
Walking distance to nearly everything Broadway and Times Square.
Subway close by and convenient for trips to downtown and the new 911 memorial/museum.
We checked in and had neglected to bring our print-out of the confirmed price and numbers of nights we were staying. We had booked a month earlier.
The hotel had our reservation for fewer days than booked but were able to extend, with an up charge for the room of $280.00. Print out your reservation, confirmation number and it would be helpful to write down the persons name that you spoke with. Travel with the papers!

Room Tip: 46th floor is quiet with great city views, the elevators are not huge but very quick

Wonderful location, right at Central Park: A real treat for a first time visit to NYC, Empire State Building, Broadway and Metropolitan museum all within walking distance.
For the location and grandeur I expected the decor to match. It didn't. Very classic, slightly worn - still comfortable though.
Unbelievable hotels still charge extra for Wifi! Plus it's limited to 2 devices.
Overall, ++ for location, - for decor and Wifi charges, makes the overall score to an average.

Room Tip: budget tip: So many places to eat/have breakfast within close proximity for much less than the hotel...

Dear JvDuuren,
Thank you for your recent stay and review. We are glad to hear you had an overall pleasant stay and enjoyed the surrounding areas of the hotel. Our Wi-Fi system does incur a daily charge to hotel folio. We have recently upgraded the system to a 200mb switch from a 10mb switch, which drastically increases the service speed and capability. The hotels decor is grand European design, preserving the Helmsley tradition. We are in the process of upgrading the hotel lobby decor and furniture in newly renovated guest rooms. Again, thank you for your valued business and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Let me start by saying I really like this hotel -- the location is awesome, the views of the park can be incredible, and the staff are really top notch. However this last visit gave me some concern -- the short story is that we booked a premier suite overlooking the park for around $500 per night plus tax and so forth. Per the website, this would put us between floors 30 and 45 or 46, thus the higher rate. So we happened to get into town and checked in too early to get the room. No problem that we needed to wait a few hours. I ran to a business meeting for the afternoon and my spouse would get the room around 2 or 3. However, I found out that they booked us on the 10th floor (spouse was not aware I had booked the more expensive room). When I mentioned that we really should have been 20 floors higher, we decided to be one of "those guests" and complain -- after all, it was a premium to get a higher floor as it should be for NYC. So, the woman at the front desk said they were out of premium rooms, but offered a free breakfast. Nope, not good enough. So she came back and offered $200 off per night. Fine. Good deal and thanks. So at check out of course this was not reflected on the bill so it took another round of discussions and consult with the manager who honored the deal. This was all very pleasant and professional. Things happen and they worked to make it right.

But as a traveler what really bothers me is that when they could not put us in the premium room, they offered nothing to make it right until we pushed the issue. At a place like this, at these rates (admittedly competitive for CPS), they should have said up front that they overbooked those rooms and were either upgrading us or cutting the rate. Otherwise, had we not said anything, we would have eaten around $450 in rates and taxes that we ought not have paid. I will chalk this up to an oversight, but some folks might question the integrity of the hotel.

All in all a fine visit and they did work to make it right after we pushed twice. Park Lane is not off of our list, but will think twice about booking there again.

Dear Eurorunner,
Thank you for choosing the Park Lane Hotel New York and sharing feedback from your recent stay. On behalf of the hotel, I would like to express our sincerest apology for the oversight on delivering the appropriate room category reserved. Our Front Office mgt team was able to confirm the room type was over reserved due to an unexpected extension. As rightfully due, a credit was issued to your final folio. Our staff is trained to extend recovery for an oversight such as this on the hotels error. We will certainly revisit the policy and procedure with the team. We hope you will consider the Park Lane Hotel New York in your future travel arrangements.

You just can't beat the location for the price. We loved being right next to Central Park. The subway was incredibly convenient, also.

We arrived at 11pm on a Thursday and were fourth in line to check in. There was only one person working the desk, and she was having incredible issues with the computers. It took a full hour for us to get through the line and checked in.

The linens and pillows were awesome. One thing I can't understand is why a hotel would place such comfortable linens on such horrible mattresses. The mattresses were so hard, we barely slept. I won't be using this hotel again for this reason, which is sad, because we enjoyed everything else about the hotel.

Thank you wjbzup for your recent review. We are pleased to hear of your appreciation for the hotel location and guest room amenities. Regarding your notation of the mattresses, our guests overall rave of the mattress and linen quality. Some of our newly renovated guest rooms have recently received new mattresses, which may contribute as a reason for your discomfort. In the future, please notify our Front Office team and we can have a room move issued as soon as it becomes available. Also we apologize for que time at the desk. Computer and system issues can arise unexpectedly and our staff is trained thoroughly to operate in these dire times. Your business and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Fabulous views over Central Park are the only thing this hotel has going for it. Very disappointed with my experience. Room wasn't ready at check in time. No hot water in shower - took SIX phone calls and repeated visits from engineer to fix. Phone calls to duty manager and concierge went to voicemail! No fridge or mini bar in room (suite). Staff generally unhelpful and dismissive. No tourist info in room. Did get free breakfast both days after complaining about problems. Lovely breakfasts in restaurant overlooking Central Park. Service in restaurant was good. Bathroom smelled of mould. Hotel is definitely a faded beauty.

Dear OzGirl20142014,
Thank you for choosing the Park Lane Hotel New York and sharing your feedback. Our sincerest apologies regarding the check-in time and hot water issues experienced. The hotel overall ran into an unexpected hot water service issue, which effected numerous guest rooms. I am happy to hear service recovery was extended via breakfast and you enjoyed dining in the illustrious Park Room, overlooking Central Park South. An update on the status of our in-room mini bars is that the rooms are being equipped for the installation of state of the art units and enhanced selections. Again, thank you for your valued business and review.

By all accounts a hotel room shouldn't cost over $500 a night. However we are talking about Manhattan where $1,000 is common, a city like others where money is skewed so I was actually very happy to spend less than that for an evening.

That qualifies as value. The hotel is old, it's a former Helmsley if I recall but is in a great location and all faults of an old hotel are made up with the service you receive when you're there.

What did I experience? A tiny lobby with a 30 minute check in process at 3 pm. Upon checkout, my girlfriend actually left clothes in the closet which we came back to retrieve. Unfazed, a top notch staff that reminds me of the nyc cool to rise above and also deliver even if it's not pretentious or like you may experience in another city.

The rooms are clean, no frills and actually decent considering what you may go wrong. I'd come here again.

I didn't have a chance to try their resto or Harry's, however did walk through and would definitely do so on my next visit as time permits.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room if that's important to you, they'll hopefully have one with less neighb...

So it's true what you read about the more recent reviews, room service is all but gone, the amenities in the room have changed somewhat, and you see a lot of new faces as you walk around the hotel. No dinner service in the Park Room, either. However, the staff still makes this crown jewel incredible. We've been coming here for 10 years and always had great service, and the same can be said for our most recent stay. The staff in the lobby were most welcoming, including Editah at reception who was kind enough to find us an upgraded room on the Park! We were celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary so it made it so special! We received even received a bottle of champagne and a fruit/cheese plate from one of the managers, Avi, a really sweet gesture! Can't thank the staff enough for being so attentive to during our trip, we can't wait to come back again next year! Thank you! - Rob and Elayna
