“An oasis of calm in a great area of New York!”
Reviewed 14 August 2014 via mobile

5 minutes walk from the 79th Street subway station, 30 seconds from a selection of bars and restaurants, the Lucerne is in a fantastic location for walking to the American Natural history museum and Central Park. In addition, the Subway opens up the whole of NYC.

We had a room on the corner of Broadway and 79th Street and were surprised how quiet it was! Although the rooms are not as large as in some other cities - which is expected in New York - our family room was comfortable, cool and very clean. Beds were exceedingly comfortable! We were very pleased with the traditional values of the hotel, with friendly doormen and front desk staff as well as a very helpful and knowledgeable concierge.

We booked through hotels.com and got a rate inclusive of wifi, which was reliable and fast.

Overall an excellent stay in a fantastic location. Thanks to previous guests on trip Advisor who helped us to choose the Lucerne!

Unusual yes but I really wanted to do it. The hotel is just fine; it's a bit dated but that adds character. What I really wanted to share was my surprise to return to the room after a housekeeper named Jania had cleaned it for us. It had the feel of home. I had no idea how I'd changed to accommodate 'hotel' service until after Jania had cleaned it. What was different? The way she'd arranged our toiletries and ordered the room spoke to her personalized service, to the fact she cared about how she did her work - and you could feel it. The room had a different spaciousness even if everything was 'the same'.
And, now, this is what I remember most of the hotel - her graciousness in leaving our room so it felt like home.
Pretty fantastic, eh? Yes. Would that every hotel experience was that superb.

This review is mostly about a young woman, Jania, a lovely housekeeper. She took care of our room for 2 out of the 5 days we stayed there and I have to say her touch gave the room warmth and made returning to it a bit more like home and less like a hotel. It's so easy to get an ordinary vibe after housecleaning that when you get 'the feel of home' it's a wake-up call. There is someone who actually cares about the quality of our experience. How often do we really thank these people... and I don't just mean with money, with heart. Maybe if we did the quality of our travel experience would change.

After staying in the more frenetic midtown, we decided to try a hotel in
the more residential Upper West Side. We could not have been more pleased
with the staff and location of The Lucerne. Even before our arrival,
we contacted the concierge for Broadway tickets. Ron could not have been more helpful.
On arrival, we found the staff and the lobby area welcoming (unlike our
previous midtown hotel lobby). Our 8th Floor Superior Deluxe Double
Room, with a view of UWS rooftops, was just the right size for the two
of us. The hotel is conveniently located a one-block walk from the #1
subway, which includes stops at Columbus Circle and 50th Street (close
to Broadway), which we easily and inexpensively rode to midtown. It is
also within walking distance from many eating places. The ones we
especially liked were Le Pain Quotidien, Alice's Tea Cup, Spice, and Pinkberry
for a frozen-yogurt dessert. Just a heads up if you want to use the
breakfast coupons the hotel provides for the attached Nice Matin
restaurant, you need to arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends. Not noticing
that, we arrived closer to 10:30 am, and our coupons were not honored.
For that reason, and since we found great breakfast meals at Sugar & Plumm and
Le Pain Quotidien, we never returned to the hotel restaurant. Great discount shopping
at Marshall's was about 2 blocks away. The hotel is also within walking distance of
Central Park, the Natural History Museum, and Riverside Park, a quieter neighborhood
park with a beautiful river view. Upon our departure, Elvin could not have been more helpful. We would definitely stay at The Lucerne Hotel again.

We stayed for 3 nights in August, 2014. Upon arrival (early) our room was not quite ready. No problem! We got acquainted with the neighborhood and received a call about 2 hours later that our room was ready. Charming room on the 10th floor. Would have liked a view of the Hudson, but we knew we wouldn't spend much time in the room anyway so it was not a big deal. The staff was friendly and accommodating at all times. We enjoyed breakfast at the Nice Matin one morning, and also grabbed a bite at nearby pub one afternoon. Lovely area and found it very easy to get everywhere with the subway a block away. Central Park is very close as well. We would definitely stay at The Lucerne again!!

I had some trepidations about the location but could not ignore all the positive comments and price. Glad we booked the Lucerne and with subway stops one block and another two and a half block it was easy to get anywhere. A 24 hour drug store across the street and some very nice restaurants within easy walking distance. We will definitely book here again.
