“Bentley Hotel, NYC”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

We arrived at 2 pm and unfortunately our travel agent had not booked a two bedded room for us - we asked about the possibility of this and were told yes it was possible but the room would not be ready until much later in the afternoon and there would be a $30 a night extra charge. That was a bit disappointing. As it was our original room was not ready either and we had to wait an hour, which is fine as check in is not till 3 pm. I had to approach the reception again when no-one came to tell us the room was ready. We were approached twice by the mini bus driver trying to take up back to the airport, he was directed over to us by the reception staff.

The room was excellent, though we did not have much of a view, The room and bathroom were spotless and fresh towels were provided every day.

The staff that I encountered were polite and friendly.

I was born and raised in NYC, and although I have since moved away, I come back often. It's hard to find a decent, clean hotel in the city that isn't at least $400 a night. When you come to NYC, you need to readjust your hotel values a little--prices that would get you a four star hotel in most other cities will get you a two star hotel here.
That's why the Bentley is such a great value. I just returned from a five night stay, and for NYC, this was a real find. The location is central, yet away from the hubbub of midtown (some might find it a little too far East but everything is walkable and there are zillions of cabs).
The rooms are well appointed and clean (not always a given in NYC hotels), and the hotel certainly feels and looks like it's a lot more expensive.
Best of all, every single person who worked there, from the front desk people to the bellmen, were friendly, courteous and helpful.
This is my new go-to hotel for future trips to the city.

We have been in the Bentley over easter 2014 and had a good stay in one of the "Deluxe King" rooms on the 14th floor. It was pretty much like the room on the front page of their web site (maybe even exactly that room), with panorama windows on two sides of the room with view over the Queensboro Bridge and the East River. We haven't tried the hotel restaurant.

The hotel is located on the east side of Manhattan, right next to the East River, between Upper East Side and Midtown East. From there it's a ten minutes walk to the Lexington/59th Street metro station. That's a good starting point to explore Manhattan. In close proximity (10 minutes) of the hotel you also find all kind of shops (grocery stores, drugstores, Bloomingdale's, bakeries, ...), Restaurants (we tried the Ajisai Sushi on Lexington Ave, which was good, but standard sushi), Diners (the Ritz was ok), Starbucks and everything you would expect from a place not far from the heart of Manhattan.

Pros: Clean, comfortable room, great view, very friendly staff, receptionists were always helpful

Mediocre: Bit noisy, but ok (well, it's Manhattan and there's lots of traffic on the Queensboro). If you want quiet, better choose another town. Room could be a bit bigger, but was still ok.

Bad: Ridiculous extra prices for almost everything. WiFi $13 each day per device. Even a data roaming connection to my european provider is still cheaper. Anyone's gonna pay that? $11 for a pack of peanuts, also the in-room Keurig "coffee" is not free unlike other hotels in that price range. The radiator did not work properly, which was not a big problem (was still warm enough). We forgot to tell the reception. The last afternoon of our trip we stayed in the lobby, waiting for the car, where it was so cold that we had to wear jackets. Sadly, the coffee bar is closed throughout the day, so we couldn't even warm up by a hot drink. This all is enough reason for a bad service rating.

A few tips for non-US visitors: If you need internet, go to a T-Mobile store. They had pre-paid data plans and phone flat rate for $3 a day (plus $10 once for the sim card). With an unbranded smartphone you are probably still able to use the "tethering" function of your phone to connect additional devices, although they state that won't work. German travellers should consider Cellion, which give you a free, time-limited US sim card (pay per use) with cheap rates to Germany.

The Ritz Diner on 1st St. (just a few minutes away) is quite ok if you're seeking a breakfast option or go for a burger. Free WiFi here, ask for password.

Buy a one-week ticket for the metro ($30) if you stay for some time. You will probably need it. In my experience, this is the best way to quickly move throughout the town.

We departed from Newark Airport, and the hotel staff organized a transfer in one of those typical Lincoln Town Cars (quite comfortable in comparison to a cab). Pricing was at $75, which was ok for us at all.

Room Tip: The "King Deluxe" rooms with view over the East River are quite nice. Have been on the 14t...
