“Great Price, Great Location, Great Room!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2009

My mother and I were a little worried about the hotel. We got a really great deal on expedia for four nights, so we booked. It's only after reading some reviews on the internet that we started to wonder what kind of place this was going to be, our worries certainly weren't founded. Okay so here is the deal: our room was on the fourth floor and they had just renovated it! We weren't expecting a presidential suite, we did not get one either, it was just a small, cozy, clean room for the both of us. Here is the thing, you aren't staying there for the room, you are staying there for the city.
The only thing my mother and I disliked was the elevators, those darn things! One of them was broken, so they had two in service, but those two only came to our floor like once every ten minutes, we actually preferred using the stairs, so good luck to you if you are one the 20th floor!
All in all we loved this hotel, it was a five minute walk to Times Square, a fifteen minute walk to Rock. Center and the Disney store, not to mention the library, and any theater on broadway. We strongly recommend you go there on your next trip, unless you are like super rich or something.

We had a strange experience at this hotel. We booked through Lastminute.com for a one-bed suite and a standard double room but when we got there were told that they didn’t have our rooms. After some argument with the night manager they agreed to temporarily give us three rooms (there were five of us). The next morning, the day manager was extremely apologetic and offered us a room upgrade, plus a free breakfast, as an apology for the inconvenience. Strangely, at reception we overheard someone else, who had also booked through Lastminute complaining of exactly the same problem (except that he’d been put in a different hotel for his first night).

Anyway, the result is that we saw both the budget and more luxurious parts of the hotel – the hotel appears to want to cater to both markets. On to the rooms. Our first room was a standard double and pretty miserable. It was very small (I’m 6ft 3in and kept bumping into things), hadn’t been cleaned properly and the fixtures were old and a bit tired. Our second room (let’s call it the apology room) was a king size double and was completely different – spotlessly clean, very big and very pleasant. My in-laws’ suite was also immaculate and very comfortable. So our experience was that both the accommodation and the level of service were superior in the luxury rooms.

The hotel’s location was perfect – a ten-minute walk from Times Square, Broadway, Central Park, the Rockefeller Centre. Its diner was quite pleasant and had a reassuringly American feel, and the nearby Carnegie Deli is also worth a visit (although its massive portions made for quite an expensive breakfast).

I would give the Wellington Hotel a qualified recommendation. The location is amazing, and the prices very good, but our standard room on the first night (and the argument required to get it) were rather unpleasant and I would suggest getting an upgraded room if you can afford it.

(The ratings I give are based on our second room - those for the standard room would be significantly lower).

We were a group of six, including 2 teenagers staying for a week from 2nd April. This was our third visit and our friends first. Although we arrived 3 hours before check in,our friends room was ready on arrival. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and kindly stowed our luggage in our room until it was ready. An added bonus was that we all got upgraded rooms. We got a very large suite with bags of room and dual aspect windows, and no noisy radiators, ideal for a family with teens. The only problem of too few towels was resolved immediately. We found the hotel staff friendly throughout our stay. Yes, the hotel is a bit dated, but it's got art deco character and is set in a brilliant location, with Central Park, Times Square, 5th Ave shopping and Empire State Building all within walking distance.
There are lots of good delis to choose from for breakfast, lunch or dinner, we used the Park Cafe (set in the hotel) for breakfast, Fluffys down the road for a quick coffee stop and were spoiled for choice for dinner. I would recomend the Cancun Mexican restaurant near Columbus Circle for dinner. To see the sights, use the tour buses, but to get around New York quickly and safely, we would recomend getting a $7-50 metro card which gives you unlimited travel for the day. Roger, in the hotel shop is very helpful and informative about New York . We would also recomend flynig BA, the service couldn't be better, plus we all got upgraded seats on our return journey. We would definately stay here again.

You get what you pay for with the Wellington because by NY standards, it's quite affordable. You can't beat the location because its right in Midtown Manhattan - 10 blocks to Times Square, 5 blocks to Central Park with a subway station right outside. Plenty to do, eat and see in the surrounding blocks as well, so you won't be disappointed with the location.

However, the hotel is old and tired and the service sometimes left something to be desired. The lobby area is too small and always seemed to be teeming with people and suitcases. This made it difficult to get efficient service. In addition, the maids didn't respect 'do not disturb' signs by constantly knocking asking to obtain access in the mornings.

Also, the room I was in was very small (expected) and the heater was loud and worked only occassionally, the TV didn't work (required me to replug some cords), the bed was uncomfortable and the hot water in the shower was temperamental and upredictable. The wallpaper was peeling and the room wasn't particuarly clean.

So all in all, you're really paying for the location here. It's not bad value but don't expect much from the hotel or the rooms and you'll be fine.

Great Location, shabby rooms, reserved a suite and was told there were none available. at time of arrival. No coffee in room and at night the heater made clanging noises about every 20 min. I would spend a little extra next time for a nicer night sleep after walking alot. Bathrooms leave alot to be desired.

Excellent value for the money. Yes it is looking a bit tired but at the end of the day we were only in the room to sleep, after a hard day pounding the streets. The rooms are small but very clean .We were on the 20th floor at the back of the hotel, not a great view, but well away from the traffic noise on 7th ave.Location is very good, a short walk to Time Sq, and Broadway/42nd street. a few blocks from Central Pk, and tube stations a plenty, to take you wherever. Loads of places for breakfast next to hotel. All in all this hotel was well worth it and we would stay again .Tip. read what you will into this experience. this was part of a six day trip, 3nghts New York then onto Las Veagas for three nights. all flights were with America Airlines. Arrived in New York minus all our hold luggage. spent two out of three days without clothes etc.New York to Vegas, boarded plane at 4pm for a 4.30pm departure. 1) engine problem. delayed 90mins.2) no crew to push back plane.another 60mins.3) now the weather is closing in and we are stuck in a que of planes waiting to get out before they close airport. all together 4hrs on the plane before we took off. no drinks or food. once airborne diverted to avoid weather, this diversion meant we didnt have enough gas to get us to vegas, so had to land at Dallas to refuel and take on more food ( ran out halfway down the aisle). LAnded in vegas. 5hr flight took 12 hrs. one sandwhich and two drinks. On our return to the uk, guess what, plane delayed at Dallas, and we arrived home minus our luggage. Amazing how much one airline can [--] up on a six day trip. Lesson learnt we wont be flying with AA again.

Stayed here for a week in February. Was a good deal, as it was our fist time in NY we wanted somewhere really central, and got that with this hotel! It is right beside Central Park, and a few blocks from Times Square! There is a subway station right outside it. The rooms were fine, bit on the small side, but who cares in NY! We did have the mad noisy radiator, but got used to it! Was a perfect base.
