“More shabby than chic”

I read some of the other reviews and I guess your experience depends on your level of expectation. I expected more for $250 a night. My room is small and has no character. No artwork on walls. Windows that are old, drafty, and dirty, overlooking a brick wall, and offering no sound dampening for outside traffic. Hotel is noisy with old wood floors and no carpets to dampen sound. No coffee maker in room. Two mismatched uncomfortable chairs. All but one slow elevator is broken. Valet parking is expensive and not at all convenient. I had to double park and get honked at for 5 minutes before being helped. Check in was slow. Lobby smells bad. Location is good though. Flat screen is nice, but channel selection limited. Best for folks who plan to spend all their time out and about and just need a place to park their things and try and sleep.

Don't stay here unless you really need cheap. Noisy, dirty rooms, under construction ( let's hope that start from scratch). I appreciate a bargain and can deal with OK to whatever hotels but this one was one of the worst I have ever stayed in---anywhere! Don't do it.

Room Tip: Call and see if they have renovated!

Stayed for 10 nights in late November 2013 with my fiancé. The location of this hotel is exceptional as a base to explore both uptown and downtown Manhattan. All staff at the Gershwin were helpful and friendly and the room we stayed in was clean and very comfortable - particularly after being upgraded from a Queen size room to a King size room by general Manager John Agosto without having to ask! Really enjoyable experience, will definitely be back.

Room Tip: King Size room is well worth the upgrade!

While riding the elevator up to my room, I started chatting with other guests about The Gershwin Hotel and one of them said she didn't know how to describe it, and felt like “boutique hotel” was not appropriate. I said I had started calling it a "bohemian" hotel and they all readily agreed that was a great it description, so hence the title of my review. The Gershwin Hotel is a very basic, no frills hotel. So if you’re thinking you’re going to lounge around in a plush terry cloth robe all day and order room service, this hotel is definitely not for you. However, if you’re looking for somewhere to basically store your luggage while you’re out all day (and most of the night) exploring this incredible city, I can highly recommend The Gershwin Hotel. It’s in a fabulous location and the rates can’t be beat. Sure, some of the tiles in the bathroom are cracked and the paint is pealing here and there and it’s a little dated, but it had the three things I look for in a hotel…1) Fresh and spotlessly clean bed linens, 2) Clean and NEW bath towels, and 3) Great water pressure in the shower! For the money and the location, The Gershwin Hotel cannot be beat.

Booked this hotel lastminute on a whim, and boy did I strike lucky! Beautifully decorated in an artsy/ quirky nyc style, the most comfy beds, spotless room. My only gripe was that the gorgeous antique radiator made an awful noise when I turned it on of a night. Centrally located, excellent and helpful staff, good wifi. Yes it is next to the sex museum, but you don't 'see' anything, not that kind of place, all very matter of fact. Would def. visit again.

Ps there is work going on at the mo, so a little noisy if your idea of a holiday is to stay in your hotel room all day, if not its not a problem!

We stayed in Gershwin hotel five nights with my two sisters. We had booked a room for 3 persons and without asking, we got upgraded to a bigger room! Or actually it was a flat with two bedrooms. The flat was nicely decorated and much more spacious than we expected. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the cafe Birch next to the lobby provided us coffee and breakfast. The location of this hotel was really good, we could walk to many locations and there were two subway stations close by. I would recommend this hotel to all mid-budget travellers, of course it is not a 5 star hotel, but the price/quality ratio is really good! The neighbourhood is safe and clean.

We Stayed at Gershwin Hotel for 5 nights and we just loved it. Despite one problem with warm water, one of the days, it's a well located Hotel, with a nice decor and great staff. Just around the corner you'll find a lot of good places for have your meals, from breakfast to dinner, fancy restaurants or tiny bars and you have a lot of subway stations to go wherever you want.
We trully recommend this spot!
