“Nice place for a tourist trip to NYC”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

Renovated fully repaired room. Nice décor. Helpful staff. Great location. Many places to have a breakfast/ lunch/ dinner nearby the hotel. Slow elevator. After the renovation is completed, it will be an absolutely nice place to stay.

We came into the city to attend a dinner with business associates. We always look forward to driving in, but rarely stay overnight. A friend recommended The Gershwin. The hotel was very easy to locate. Feeling uncertain about parking, as many in the city are, we left our car on the street and came inside for assistance.
The gentleman at the front desk approached as like an old friend, but not in an invasive way. Swiftly he handled our car and our accommodations. He was a wealth of information. Next, we were brought up to our room by another friendly, professional gentleman. We were thrilled when we saw our room - spacious and modern, with a terrific theme centered on Gershwin's "Manhattan." The bed was extremely comfortable; the shower was large and inviting; we were very pleased with every aspect.
The people at the desk were quick with suggestions of places to go after our dinner, and ultimately made for an exciting evening out. We highly recommend The Gershwin Hotel, and are looking forward to coming back to the city this summer for another trip. Thank you!

We stayed at the Gerswhin Hotel for a long weekend in June 2014. Our room was brand new as the hotel was under renovation. The location is excellent, right next to 5th ave and a bunch of subways. The staff is very nice and helpfull. We had a great stay!

The hotel is under renovation, and there is a great deal of difference between the old and new rooms. Fortunately for Tripadvisor readers, I am able to share my experience with both.

The Gershwin courteously allowed us to enter our room about an hour and a half earlier than the normal 3pm check-in. We were given room 510, and after a bit of a wait for the single elevator we arrived on the fifth floor and made our way down the narrow hallway. The closer we got to our room, the louder the sounds of construction became. Come to find out that the renovation was being done on the sixth floor, immediately above our heads. This was Friday afternoon. I called to ask how long this was going to go on, and whether it would continue through the weekend. They said the work would stop around 3:30 pm, which was about 20 minutes from the time of my call, and no construction would be happening Saturday or Sunday.

So, we felt we could deal with this and reconciled ourselves to the rather small, dim room and tiny bathroom that comprises #510. We had plans in the evening and decided to nap a bit, despite the construction continuing until 5 pm. Our snooze was interrupted by somebody bursting through the door. He apologized and left hastily.A few minutes later the desk called (interrupting the nap again) to give their most sincere apologies for the bellman's intrusion. A mistake had been made, so sorry, etc. etc. We let it slide, and were actually relieved that it was a bellman with an access card and not a faulty door.

The bed was actually quite comfortable and seemed new. It was covered in crisp white linens and a white duvet with cover, all very hospital-clean. After our siesta we tried to catch some of the World Cup on TV, but kept losing reception. When we left for the evening we told them about the bad reception and they promised to have an engineer come into look at it.

The TV was indeed fixed when we returned, and I asked again whether Saturday would be free of construction in the hotel. Oh yes, they don't work on the weekends, we were assured.

Well, yes, they do. I got up very early on a Cronut quest but was dismayed to hear the renovation going on when I got back to the hotel. I expressed my disappointment, and was offered a quieter room that we could access around noon.

We came down to the lobby at noon and after a few minutes and many smiles and apologies for all the inconvenience, were given "one of the best rooms" number 906, in the renovated section.
The moment we stepped onto the 9th floor we felt we had gone from a 2-star to a 4-star hotel. Tasteful charcoal carpet and little black lamps lined the hallways. An old-fashioned phone sat on the credenza opposite the elevator, all was reminiscent of Old New York, but all was spotlessly clean and brand spanking new (even the "vintage" phone had push buttons).

The room was delightful. Much roomier, airier, big flat-screen TV, temperature controlled thermostat, mini-fridge, larger window and nice little touches like art on the wall and doorknobs that looked like they came from Restoration Hardware. The bathroom was the biggest improvement. Very tastefully redone, much larger than the first room, light, modern but with touches to evoke old New York, like hexagonal marble floor tiles and a whimsical border tile that replicates stanzas from a song about Manhattan. The shower has a rain shower or handheld option, and it took us a while to figure out the controls but eventually we managed to get plenty of hot water out of both shower heads. Slightly better than normal array of guest toiletries, lovely plush towels. Best of all, we could not hear the noise of renovation from this room.

We found the location to be quite nice. There is an "Essen" on the corner, "slow food served fast," which is open 24 hours and at some times of the day has a hot and cold buffet for 8 or 9 dollars a pound. Depending on the time of day, you can get made to order burgers, sandwiches, french toast and so on. It's not a place to go for a romantic dinner, but perfect for that essential quick bite. A Birch coffee is a few doors down from The Gershwin, very excellent coffee there. The 6 subway line is only a few blocks away, and we used that to get around.

The hotel is one block north of Madison Park, which is a small, well-tended park perfect for whiling away the time and people watching. It is home of The Shake Shack, an eatery that serves hormone-free burgers and organic milkshakes. The line was very long every time we walked by. After we checked out of the hotel we picked up a New York Times and relaxed in the park until it was time to leave. The staff stored our bags for us after we checked out.

The staff really makes this hotel. Mistakes happen, but they dealt with my concerns swiftly and with utmost courteousness. The staff treats you like you are in a five-star establishment. We are inclined to stay here again.

Room Tip: Get a room in the renovated section!

Renovations are taking place, but that did not hinder our visit at all. Very helpful and friendly staff, wonderful room. Subway is a few blocks away. Coffee shop nearby, and Essen, a cafeteria of sorts, is down the street. Essen has a variety of foods and very reasonable prices for New York. We ate breakfast there and planned our day.

Nice hotel with nice renovated room (about half of them), Good AC. Some sound through the door.
Only one elevator working, which sometimes made the waiting several minutes long.
Very good location on Manhattan, close to several underground staions,

I really love this hotel. I went there on my first time on a recommendation. And it is the best location I feel for any first timers to NYC locate mid town you are central so you can get the subway which is close by or walk around and find yourself in the centre of everything.
Even though it is central you will still be able to sleep well with hardly any noise.

The staff are friendly and this is a hotel I will definitely go back to. I have heard that they have remodelled the rooms, so I think I need to go back and have a look. But just wondering if that grand piano is still there.

I love this retro hotel.
