“Retro new York at it's best”
Reviewed 22 April 2012 via mobile

If your after an authentic retro new York experience instead of a soulless cookie cutter hotel this is the place. All fifties pictures, a Sinatra appeal and fabulous empire state building views. We were upgraded to the suite, which was a welcome treat and a very comfortable experience. The breakfast was delicious and it was good to have a hearty breakfast before a day exploring the sights. Central location and great value for money. Will definitely return!!

With its original but refurbished art deco interior, this is a pleasant surprise amongst the hubub of New York. It is worth paying a few dollars more for an upgraded room as some can be rather small with souless views. Beautifully clean, the beds were extremely comfortable with high quality cotton duvet covers and sheets. Centrally located to shops and attractions, a close
-up view of the Empire State can be enjoyed from the room terrace where drinks and cocktails are served from 5pm. Also a haven for smokers!
Very pleasant staff who took a pride in their hotel and job and a credit to New Yorkers. Good old fashioned manners gave this hotel a five star feel!

Room Tip: Ask for a twin queen room or one on the PH floor (only another $40 a night more)

took a family room over looking main entrance although the hotel was perfect ,extremley clean decor excellent , hotel staff very good, it was very noisy on a night especially with bin wagons and workmen ,i know this is no fault of the hotel but after a hard day exploring the last thing you need is to be kept awake .The breakfast was good and the tea /coffee on 24 hour .The location was ideal macys at the bottom of the street empire state next block and times square 5 min walk ...would highly recommend to everyone and dont miss the roof top bar with over view of empire state lit up on an evening

we celebrated my wifes 50th birthday here and were not sure what to expect..We have to say we were pleasantly surprised. This hotel was superb in location, services friendliness of staff and clean. it is pretty much central to everything 25 minutes walk from central park, 10 from times square..40minutes from the bank area.. and much to my wifes joy 2 minutes from maceys. We would recomend this hotel to anybody as a central base to explore new york..subway 2 minutes aqway and main bus /coach station 10 minutes, Breakfast although basic was ample and plentiful and eata s much a suou want.We are returning this year 2012 and again are looking forward to the excellent hospitality of the bar which is attached to it.

Room Tip: book queen size rooms on front of hotel

Stayed 4 nights at the Hotel Metro with my grand-daughter as an 18th birthday present.! Perfect location betweem 5th & 6th Avenue,2 minutes from Macy's and the Empire State Building. Roof top bar overlooking the Empire State Building.Staff were all friendly.Only seconds from the subway. Excellent breakfast, someone stated breakfast room was small, in fact there are 3 rooms. The concierge was excellent giving advice and getting us theatre tickets. Our room was on the 9th floor and was large by New York standards, with huge bay window and 2 comfortable queen beds. The last twice we have stayed at the Marriott Marquis and paid a lot more. Could not fault this hotel it is a gem, would go back anytime.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor room, as these have all had bathrooms updated.

I really enjoyed my visit to New York at the end of March 2012 and on the whole my stay at Hotel Metro. However, I want to add to other reviews by pointing out a few things which may have changed my choice had I know before I went:
1. My room was dark as it overlooked an alley and the decor was quite dingy/plain. From other reviews I was expecting something more homely.
2. The breakfast was fine as long as all you wanted was carbs! All muffins and breads with a token offering of cereals. Also all the "crockery and cutlery" is disposable - paper cups, plastic cutlery and polystyrene plates - I was shocked but found this in other NY delis. If you want a proper breakfast on proper plates etc, you can find outstanding value but finding real American diners in side streets. Avoid the franchises/chains/deli markets - you will just get takeaway stuff with (again) disposable utensils even if you "eat in".
3. No bath - only a shower. A good shower but a shower nonetheless. As New York is quite a tiring place to visit (especially if you walk a lot like I do), not being able to have a bath to relax in occasionally was a shame.

Having said all this, the hotel was really good value for money and excellently located so I would recommend it provided none of the above is an issue for you.
