The Crowne Plaza is a convenient place to stay, right off the freeway in Ventura. You can't beat it for easy access. The location is walking distance to old town shops and restaurants, as well as the Mission (you don't have to be an athlete, but it's a good trek--wear you walking shoes), and many other historic sites. The hotel is also right on the beach--walking distance to the pier and restaurants, and about a five minute drive from the marina.

Note: you'll be a few yards from a train crossing. The trains stop early at night and don't start up until later in the morning on the weekend, so train horns and signals weren't a problem. With the door to the balcony open, you can hear the waves, the freeway, and the trains. For some, this will be an issue, for others, it won't. We really didn't have a problem with it, and I tend to be noise-sensitive. I was able to get some good work done, and slept fine--though I am sometimes an insomniac on trips. Perhaps the "white noise" was the right combo for me, with the traffic slowing down in the evenings and the waves as mufflers.

Service is good, overall, though we did have trouble with our parking stub when getting out. Our package came with prepaid/free parking. At the end, the meter indicated that we owed parking. We were able to straighten it out with no added charge, but didn't find out there was a problem until we were at the gate, with another car right behind us. So, at checkout time, you'll want to verify that your parking is okay.

The Crowne has a solid restaurant that provides good food, creative menus, healthful options, and service with a friendly atmosphere. The hotel itself is on the older side, but the restaurant seems updated. One thing, they store a broom and dustpan by the kitchen door, against a wall in view of restaurant seating. It would be a good idea for the staff to find a nook for these, out of view of dining guests.

All rooms seem to have an ocean "view." However, the hotel is constructed at a right angle to the shore. So you have to sit right by the window or out on the balcony to enjoy the ocean. The desk was near the window. As such, I enjoyed the view a good part of the time in the room. It's really great to be able to look down into the water, and to see the gold and amber colors of the sunset reflected brilliantly on the pier. Bedazzling with the hills and the ocean.

You'll want to snag parking at the hotel early. It fills up. The overflow option is a public stacker a short distance away. It's covered, whereas the hotel parking lot isn't, and there are cameras in view everywhere. But a number of unsavory characters roam the open area between the lot and the hotel and around the public walkway in front of both the parking structure and the hotel. Not the safest for folks who are coming and going alone before or after daylight.

Our room was clean. The halls grew a bit noisy (soccer "convention") with small children running back and forth until they got settled in the morning--sort of like a park or playground. But I don't think that's the usual. Luckily, we didn't have the hyperactivity right next to us on either side. We didn't hear our neighbors.

The elevators really became bottle-necked when kids, coaches and chaperones were checking in. Even with directions, we couldn't find the stairs. Not sure the elevator arrangement would be the safest in an emergency. Oddly, we had a long wait time even before the soccer teams came to town. Staff and patrons use the same elevators, and it appeared the elevator was routinely held on individual floors by electricians and other toolbox carriers with greater frequency than I've noted at other hotels. For convenience and safety, I hope management can work out another arrangement, or enforce it if there already is one in place.

My husband and I stayed here for one night while on our honeymoon. I was told we had an ocean view room. Our first room overlooked the interstate mainly with a tiny corner view of the ocean and pier. I requested a room change and the staff was helpful with that. Apparently, all of the rooms face the ocean at an angle. Our second room had an excellent view! There is a heated, outdoor pool and the hotel is in walking distance to some great restaurants. The room itself was average.
Overall, we had an enjoyable stay!

I thought that La Jolla was my favorite town in California. I've changed my mind after staying at the Crowne Plaza on Ventura Beach. This hotel is perfectly situated on the beach and just a few blocks to great shopping. The staff is friendly, accommodating and they work very well together. The rooms are immaculately clean, the beds are comfortable and the views are spectacular. This truly is an excellent place to stay.

While the staff at the hotel tries very hard to be helpful and friendly, I probably will not stay at this hotel again. I think if you are staying at a hotel and paying whatever the price is you should at least have free parking, as well as free Internet services. I don't mind no free breakfast but the two mentioned items should be included.

Thank you for appreciating the efforts of our staff. We will definitely pass on your recognition to them. I am sorry to hear that our additional fees would cause you to not choose to stay with us again. We keep our rates and fees very competitive with other hotels in the local market and in most cases have lower costs than them. If there is anything we can do to get you back please don't hesitate to contact one of our managers. We do offer some great package rates that may give you a value-added experience and a chance to explore the local area or enjoy some of our amenities at a lower cost. You can view our website for more info on them. Thanks again for taking the time to review our hotel.

The location is good but the hotel rooms need to be upgraded. The hotel is between the highway and the beach so the views are pretty good but the traffic noise is pretty bad. There was also quite a bit of noise from the boardwalk in front of the hotel. The boardwalk was a nice place to run in the morning and the outdoor seating for the hotel bar was a nice place to watch the sunset. However the boardwalk seem to have a lot of homeless people near the hotel and pier which made it a little sketchy at night.

Room Tip: Get a room closer to the beach and away from the highway
