We had a very nice meal well coked, nicely served & very satisfying. The restaurant has a nice ambience & very friendly staff. The prices are reasonable for the quality & the service.

The food is good. The ambiance is that of an older restaurant with wood work and dark interiors. The service is excellent.

old school place, meat and potatoes, old servers, old décor, but a reasonable meal at a reasonable price.

I don't know where to start. The food used to be good in this place. Back in the day upon being seated in the old school plush booths your waitress would bring bread, butter and salsa and a nice little relish tray. Nothing fancy but just the type of little treat to put the hunger pangs out and get things started. In a disastrous food cost control decision the relish tray and salsa have been eliminated although it is available at an extra cost. Their food has always been average but it is the location and old school décor that has always made this place a Ventura institution. The owners just doesn't get the Ventura restaurant scene and must be close to going out of business.

My wife and I decided to have fish, and liked the look of the restaurant. The interior consists of plush red seats in booths, and the waitress was one of the friendliest we've so far met in Ventura. Nice also to see a good range of beers and wines on offer.

I'm told the steaks are excellent but we had the fish, wanting a change from red meat, so I ordered the halibut and my wife the mixed seafood platter. A choice of bread besides soft white would have been appreciated, and the salad was basically lettuce with a dressing; again some garnish, even some tomato, might have livened it up.

My piece of halibut came with mushrooms on top but no discernible sauce; as a result it was dry and slightly overcooked. Along with it came mashed potato or fries, and steamed veggies, again plain and no sauces bar a tiny container of tartar sauce. But no complaints with the volume - there was plenty to eat. Nonetheless, it resembled a sort of school or institutional dinner that had been tarted up a bit for a director's visit.

My wife's fish and scallops was heavily breaded and we suspect part of it came out of a packet. If it didn't then it looked and tasted like the seafood bits you buy out of the freezer cabinet.

The food couldn't be described as bad and some hungry people who like very traditional and plain food would have enjoyed it. But we go to restaurants to eat stuff we don't cook at home. Perhaps we should have had the steaks.

It was a shame that the Lure's seafood restaurant across the road was bursting at the seams and the Sportsman was half-empty.
