“We felt like we were staying with friends”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

We spent the weekend in Yorktown to celebrate our son's graduation from Coast Guard A-School which is just down the street from the Hornsby House Inn. The owners, brothers David and Philip Bowditch, made us feel very welcome, providing us with historical information about the area and sharing stories of their childhood home. The breakfasts were bountiful with bacon, eggs, and cheese grits served on their grandmother's china. We also enjoyed afternoon wine and cheese, watching the Main Street "traffic" from the comfort of the front porch rocking chairs. David and Philip also provided us with good information about activities in the area as well as recommendations for lunches and dinners. All in all it was a wonderful weekend.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are beautifully furnished with the family's antique furniture.

Yorktown, Virginia is charming, historical and scenic and even more so when coupled with a stay at Hornsby House Inn. The nearly century old house with its historic furnishings provides a pleasant respite in the midst of historic Yorktown. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished, The breakfast and welcome are personal and sumptuous. If you are visiting the Historic Triangle don't miss a stay here.

Room Tip: The second floor rooms are great, one, aptly named the Monument Grand Suite has a patio overlooking...

We celebrated our 50th anniversary in these pleasant surroundings. The Bowditch Brothers are friendly, welcoming and accommodating in every way. They've done a great job of restoring their boyhood home to its former grandeur and clearly enjoy sharing it with their guests. The Yorktown historical setting adds to the flavor and gives significance to the venue. The cuisine was excellent, the ambiance relaxed and the hospitality genuine. Do yourself a favor and sample it!

What a wonderful bread and breakfast inn! My mother and I stayed here for 3 nights, and we were not disappointed. We felt like we were at home, and looked forward to our early morning and late evenings on the porch, listening to the birds and watching the fireflies. The breakfast was delicious and the location is excellent. The inn sits in a historic neighborhood, and David and Phil do a great job of sharing the historic details of Yorktown over breakfast. The Inn is within walking distance of the York River, historic homes, and musuems, and the entire area has the feel of a mini Colonial Willamsburg. If you visit on the weekend, it's a lot easier to walk down to the water instead of driving because of all the beachgoers(make sure you take some chairs from the porch). We also got a chance to see the fife and drum demonstration at the Victory Center (check schedule), and drive through some of the battlefields. There is a lot to do right in the area, and my only regret is that we didn't stay long enough. We should have spent our entire time here because it was close enough to everything that we did in the area, and the accomodations were excellent.

Room Tip: Riverview room is great size for 2 people and easy to move around in. Nice comfortable bed with a ni...

My wife and I are "locals" (we live in nearby Williamsburg) and decided to celebrate our 25th Anniversary at the Hornsby House Inn in Yorktown. We were not disappointed. In fact, the house and the hosts far exceeded our expectations.

The house was built in the 1930s and was the childhood home of the hosts, David and Phillip. It has been renovated and updated but still has the charm of home. The rooms are well appointed, comfortable, and very well kept. The king bed and the sitting area of the Monument Grand Suite were extremely comfortable and relaxing. The accommodations alone would have made this an excellent stay.

However, the highlight of the house were the hosts, David and Phillip. David met us on arrival and gave us a tour of the house including tidbits of history about the house and the family. He then arranged for us to join him and others for Wine and Cheese at 5pm. This was served on the patio overlooking the front yard and the Victory Monument. Again, we were regaled with stories about the house and about the history of Yorktown.

Throughout our stay, David and Phillip made us feel at home. They showed us great southern hospitality and were concerned about all the little details. They went above and beyond to make our stay great.

Breakfast at the Hornsby House Inn is also a treat. The food is prepared by either David or Phillip and is excellent. There is a wonderful spread fresh fruit, homemade Muesli, eggs, cheese grits, bacon and plenty of coffee. Again, our hosts, shared the meal with us.

And this review would be incomplete if I didn't give a "shout out" to its location. Yorktown and the Riverwalk is a hidden gem in our area. There is a stretch of beach on the York River that is apparently very popular. The Riverwalk Landing also has excellent pubs, grilles, and quaint shops. Then of course there is the historic Yorktown and the nearby Yorktown Battlefield.

I'm so glad to know that there is a quality B&B so nearby with superb hosts. If you are traveling from far or near, you won't be dissappointed with staying at the Hornsby House Inn in Yorktown.

We spent 2 nights at Hornsby House Inn and it was the highlight of our trip. David & Philip were just the best hosts. They alternated making breakfast and it was fantastic both mornings. They were both very helpful and knowledgeable regarding the sights of Yorktown and nearby Williamsburg. We wished we could have stayed more days.
