“Excellence personified!”
Reviewed 18 August 2007

Too much praise can conceivably sound false or hollow but to do less in this case would be a disservice to the York River Inn. It is, in a word, perfect. The location is unsurpassed, in the heart of historic Yorktown, with magical views of the York River, spectacular by day and perhaps more so at night!. But that is just the tip of the iceburg! The Inn is a Museum, and Bill its expert curator (as well as host, tour guide, gourmet chef, etc). You can spend a day just touring the Inn itself! Our room was as comfortable as it was interesting and stocked with every amenity known to man including but not limited to fresh flowers, fancy chocolates, notecards, numerous magazines and books, a TV, any essential toiletry item, and the most luxurious of towels and linens. Downstairs there are drinks, cookies, and snacks available 24/7. Help yourself. And Breakfast!?! Only a capital "B" can be used to describe Bill's Breakfasts! Other adjectives that come to mind are gourmet, Southern, generous, and deliciously filling. Hint: You can skip lunch...you won't need it! Be sure and read the wonderful notebooks Bill has assembled and placed in each room; there is not only a wealth of important history and tourism tips in each one but also a series of fascinating articles about your Innkeeper and his centuries old ties and contributions to the Tidewater Region and to the state of Virginia. Bill, you rock! :-) Thanks for a perfect stay!

We found this Bed and Breakfast on the Yorktown website. We stayed over the July 4th holiday and were able to walk to all events taking place in Yorktown to commerate Independance Day. Bill, our host, was hospitable and extemely knowledgeable about Yorktown and Tidewater. The breakfasts were gourmet and delicious! We felt very comfortable coming and going as we pleased. There is a very pleasent view in the common area and we especially enjoyed the birds at the feeders. We do hope to return for another visit. There is more to see in Yorktown than we could accomplish during this visit. We also found the Yorktown website and the visitor brochure (provided at the B & B) extremely helpful. Fireworks in Yorktown are spectacular!

Wonderful Bed and Breakfast. The rooms are all beautiful ( we peeked) Our room was the Presidential suite overlooking the York river. The house's location is an easy walk down to the beach, the battlefield and to town. The breakfast was a special treat, excellent food and great conversation. Owner Has an excellent knowledge of the area and history of Virginia in general. Highly recommended.

A wonderful experience, a very gracious host who provides good advice, has a deep knowledge of the area, and provides all the small touches that one hopes to find in a B&B! The room we had was well appointed and very comfortable, and the atmosphere created a comfortable victorian library feel. Breakfast is not to be missed - far beyond what we have had at other places. We strongly recommend this to anyone who is visiting the Yorktown/ Williamsburg/ Jamestown area.

This was our first B&B experience and I am sure it has spoiled us for follow on B&B's!! We arrived a few hours before check in but Bill was not put off or detered. He welcomed us and gave us a tour of the house and helped with out bags.
The Washington Suite was fabulous. Very well appointed and the view was magnificant. The room was very large with 2 1/2 sitting areas, king size bed and cozy bathroom. The furnishings were elegant and comfortable. We instantly felt very much at home.
The rest of the house was equally inviting. From the stocked mini frig to the soft music filtering through out the living room...it was a relaxing environment.
Do not have the words to express the delightful breakfast that awaited us each morning. Bill outdoes himself and provides a morning delight that will start your day off with a smile. Bread pudding w/ peaches and blueberries, baked pears with cranberries and a crab dish to die for!!!
If you want to stay in a B&B that will spoil you....come to the York River Inn....we will definitely be returning.

We stayed in the Washington Suite which had a king size bed and a great view of the York River. The room was excellent and the king bed was very cozy. The owner "Bill" was outstanding. His historic knowledge of the area was an added bonus and even though I had grown up in the area I learned alot from him and vast array of books. Each morning Bill fixed an outstanding breakfast that was out of this world. The location is idea if you want to go to the beach, Williamsburg or Jamestown and it is only about 15 minutes from the Newport News airport. I highly recommend staying here and we will defintely stay here next time we visit the area.

We got lost and arrived 30 minutes late and the inkeeper was visibly irritated by that. He took us to our room and before we could really take in the details of the decor, he began going through a strange ritual of taking the bedcovers off the bed and all the decorative pillows and putting them away in the closet as he told us the time of breakfast, where things were, what we could help ourselves to, etc. That left us with a feeling like we were unwelcome guests. Strange beginning!
The room was overlooking the large river and was scenic, but noisy due to the highway a block away.
The decor itself was reminiscent of staying at an older aunts house that had collected a variety of nic nacs, old comfortable chairs. tons of books, some historical wall pictures over the years. There was definitely a male influence to it. ( the owner is a single native historian) He puts a direction book of how to enjoy your stay in the room. What TO do and what NOT to do. The main floor is very dark , with some nice antiques in the dining room.
We went off into town and walked to all the attractions. It is a small town!
The next morning the host was friendlier and made a nice breakfast of fruit and breads. He left to a meeting and didn't visit with any guests much. We enjoyed chatting with the other guests.

Check-in time of 4 - 6 pm is clearly stated on the Inn website. Check-in time is confirmed at the time of making a reservation. Check-in time is re-confirmed in written form on the confirmation to the guest. Clear and detailed directions are on the Inn website. Clarity of directions is confirmed at the time of making a reservation. Clear and detailed directions and a map are sent with the confirmation.

The guests arrived at 6:45 pm. They had a cell phone and did not call. Their home address is 8.2 miles from the inn.

The innkeeper was driving out of the driveway when the guests arrived. He returned to the house, gave a full tour of everything (albeit condensed), and turned the bed down for the guests.

Breakfast consisted of “crabadabadoos,” a local specialty of the inn, poached pears with cranberries, baked tomatoes, and almond stuffed biscuits, not “fruit and breads.”

Breakfast is served at 8:30 am. Check-out time is 11 am. The innkeeper left the guests at the breakfast table at 10:30 am to get to a meeting at 11 am.
