“Exactly what we were hoping for.”
Reviewed 17 February 2013

We chose the Casa for its reputation as both a good birding location and a place where we (as novice birders) might learn something about this unique birding area. We chose well. The property borders the San Pedro River with immediate access to a trail where we saw hawks, ducks, songbirds and quail. The property itself has many feeders (all with great visibility from inside the inn), a pond, and trees so the birds come right to you if you just sit quietly. (In fact, a Cooper's hawk sailed right over my shoulder and snatched a Gambel's quail not 2 yards from my feet!)
Carl and Patrick are excellent hosts (and cooks). They are unobtrusive yet immediately available to answer questions, offer suggestions or just chat. They set us up with an excellent dinner reservation on the first night of our 4 day stay, had up- to- date information on winter road conditions in the canyons we planned to visit, taught me how to use my I-Bird phone app and had lots of books and literature available. Best of all, they made arrangements for us to hire the BEST bird guide in the Southwest, Wezil Welraven, who made our trip totally worthwhile. Wezil is knowledgable about birds, the natural history and geography of the local area, and is a great teacher (and storyteller). After 2 days (and about 90 NEW bird species) we felt like we really knew southeast Arizona.
In addition, the Casa itself was lovely. Our room was spacious and comfortable; it opened onto a lovely courtyard with a short walk to the main building where gourmet breakfast is served in a sunlit dining room at 2 massive banquet tables, where guests can socialize (and watch the birds during breakfast). There is also a guest service area available, with use of a common refrigerator, microwave and laundry facility. Picnic supplies (paper plates, plastic bags, ice and other things you wouldn't think of carrying in your suitcase) are provided for guest's convenience. And the owners' two big lovable (well-behaved) dogs give the place a homey feel.
Casa de San Pedro wasn't just what we were hoping for-- it was actually a lot better.

We enjoyed our second stay from December 30 through January 2, 2013, and had a delightful time. We booked over the New Year's timeframe to enjoy the Casa's special New Year's Eve party (appetizers and a scrumptious four course dinner). We were already well-acquainted with the "B&B plus afternoon pies/cookies concept" and took full advantage of all of the goodies. We had great luck with bird sightings, nature photography, and winery visitations in the Elgin/Sonoita area, all of which are possible without venturing more than one hour's drive away from the Casa. An added bonus was a snowstorm which blanketed the nearby mountains and provided a little powder dusting over the courtyard on New Year's Eve. Patrick and Karl are splendid chefs, hosts, and friends of their local community, and we appreciate what they do to help our environment. We are Nature Conservancy members and try to take advantage of the discount they provide to us and our fellow Conservancy compadres. With any luck, we will try to arrange an Arizona Nature Conservancy Chapter "official" trip to the Casa in the not-too-far-off future.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are lovely but Room 1 is next to the kitchen and may be a bit too noisy for some (w...

An oasis in the middle of the desert. This B&B is very unique, small and quiet. Also, clean and comfortable and has many small touches that make you never want to leave. It's worth the trip just to enjoy the breakfast and afternoon pie. Combines a natural setting with an elegant flair. When you are driving there you think you have made a big mistake because it's remote but then you see it and totally relax. The owners are extremely hospitable but yet know when to fade into the background. I honestly cannot think of anything else they could do to improve on their approach. We found some great restaurants close by and they have BBQ grills on the property if you want to do your own cooking. Do not miss this place, you will not be sorry.

Room Tip: This place is small, only 10 rooms and one would not be better than another. The B&B is rectangl...

This is a beautiful place. The setting in the dessert is very relaxing and serene. There is a lovely courtyard where you can enjoy the plantings and watch hummingbirds feed. Our room was nicely appointed, clean and comfortable. Patrick and Karl are great hosts. We were welcomed by Patrick upon arrival with coffee, a choice of wonderful home baked pies and pastries (baked by Patrick). In the morning, we were served a magnificent breakfast with fruit, pastries, juice, coffee and a delicious omelette created by Karl. They both joined us for breakfast and we really enjoyed our time with them. Our only regret is thatdistaste not able to stay longer!

My mother (60s) and I (30s) spent a week at Casa de San Pedro in the summer of 2012. We had originally planned to stay four nights, but extended our trip to be able to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, excellent food, and incredible birds.

Karl and Patrick are gracious hosts and phenomenal chefs. They made excellent suggestions for birding and non-birding activities, and connected us with wonderful guides (Sherri Williamson with the Southeast Arizona Bird Observatory and Wezil Walraven with Wezil Walraven Bird Tours - both easily bridged the gap between my rabid birding and my mother's beginner skill set). The Casa was peaceful, immaculate, and welcoming.

We can't wait to go back.

Wow!!!! What a beautiful and peaceful B&B. Every morning we woke up to the smell of breakfast cooking (the food is delicious) and then we watched the beautiful sunset in the evening. Soaking in the hot tub after a long day of hiking is definitely a plus. Karl and Patrick are gracious host and make sure that you are comfortable. We can't wait to stay here next year!!!
