“Delightful Oasis”
Reviewed 23 May 2010

We stayed several nights at Casa de San Pedro while birding in SE Arizona. Located adjacent to the San Pedro Riparian Preserve, the Inn was really delightful ... quite elegant but unpretentious. The setting was perfect for our interests . The room was large and comfortable, opening onto a beautiful common courtyard. Karl and Patrick were incredibly accommodating, providing early breakfasts and suggesting guided walks by area naturalists. There was a guest laundry with all supplies provided. A highlight was the specially prepared Mexican dinner ($18 pp) on the night of our arrival.

This is a GREAT place --- one of the most comfortable, pleasant B&Bs we've ever visited! Carl and Patrick, the owners/managers, have thought of every detail and are extremely accommodating hosts. Breakfasts and afternoon pies are delicious. You can walk to the San Pedro River riparian area for excellent birding. Bird feeders around the beautiful property attract dozens of species. They're perfectly situated for easy drives to the Huachuca Mountains for hiking and birding, to Kartchner Caverns, and to Bisbee, Douglas, and surrounding areas for history, dining, and shopping.

This place is a real gem - a small number of large and comfortable rooms set around a sheltered courtyard with a fountain. There are fresh pies, brownies and cookies daily as well as a salt water pool, good laundry facilities, a BBQ area and friendly and helpful owners. For a birder, this place is perfectly located in the San Pedro riparian area but it's also a great place to relax and explore the area for non-birders too. Highly recommended!

The first thing you notice is the birds. Doves, quail, and goldfinches explode from the feeders as you park, but return instantly. The breakfast room has giant picture windows to watch the feeders along the west and south sides of the house; it's like a birder's TV with constant drama as the players change places. After checking in and enjoying afternoon coffee and treats, we had to tear ourselves away from the windows to walk to the river. A pair of candy-red Vermilion Flycatchers were waiting for us as the sun began to set. Full and tasty breakfasts, an extensive library of natural history books, a computer with birding software, knowledgeable hosts (Karl said "At this time of year, the go-to birding place is Whitewater Draw underlined" and he was right. That afternoon we were nose to nose with 2000 Sandhill Cranes). Who could ask for more? Good dining, too --- a catered real Mexican dinner at the Casa (as good as any I have had in Mexico) and check out the German Cafe in Sierra Vista (we SoCal types from the Midwest miss that genre). We visited in the birding "slow season" (Ha!). We will be back; for sure!

The Casa is the place to stay if visiting southern Arizona. The location is convenient to the great birding environments. Start with a gourmet breakfast then hit the hiking trails & canyons nearby. The atmosphere is low-key friendly and very accommodating.

My visit was prompted by a "Raptors and Cranes mini-workshop" based at the Casa and provided by (wonderful folks at) SE Arizona Bird Observatory and was my introduction to the world of birding. What a terrific experience it was. The Casa and grounds are a beautiful natural wonderland and the innkeepers are most friendly, hospitable, and helpful. The breakfasts and other goodies (a fine selection of homemade pies) truly excellent. Karl and Patrick have thought of everything for making your visit comfortable and enjoyable. I'm glad to write this review as they surely deserve the praise, but its also making me realize what fun it's going to be to return for August "monsoon madness" and the birds of summer (particularly the hummingbirds). Being somewhat "mobility challenged," I would also like to commend the Casa for being as accessible as it is. I've been to many B&B's and rate this the top.

We stayed for a week in January. As first time visitors to Arizona from the UK we were a little unsure of the location but could not have been happier when we arrived. The Casa de San Pedro is the nicest B & B we have ever stayed in anywhere and Karl and Patrick couldn't have made us any more welcome. The breakfasts are awesome and my husband says the pies are so nice that they should be against the law!! The rooms are very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The relaxed atmosphere of the Casa makes one feel very at home. Birding in the garden is amazing, we particularly enjoyed the resident roadrunner. Don't look any further than the Casa de San Pedro.
