We had read mostly very positive reviews and decided some people are probably just too fussy We were wrong. Now that we've actually stayed at the Riverview, we've revised our opinion and decided instead that some people have a very loose definition of "excellent." The Riverview really is pretty bad. The lobby is stifling, but that didn't bother us. What did bother us, on the other hand, was that our room was also stifling. Though it had an air conditioner (repaired messily with duck tape), it had not been turned on prior to our arrival, and our room was hot and humid. Our room also had a broken window (also repaired with tape) and dirty. Additionally, there were no towels or shampoo. The upstairs of the house smells like a Chinese restaurant and the carpet is stained, holey, and coming unattached from the floor. It's a shame; the hotel has great bones and could be very lovely. Though it wouldn't matter that the hotel is a little down-at-heel if a suitable level of service and cleanliness were maintained.

We only stayed one night at the Riverview Hotel, but it was nice. Right across the street from the Cumberland Island Ferry, which was very convenient! Would stay here again, and would recommend for others. Bar downstairs was open late and bartender was great. They will even make a picnic lunch for you to take to Cumberland Island.

The Riverview Hotel is my favorite destination on earth. I have been visiting Cumberland Island and the Riverview for decades, and even though the old girl is in need of renovations, she still has class. When you visit this hotel, you are transported back to a simpler, kinder time; one where people are recognized, and feel welcomed and appreciated. The sunrises over the marsh in the early morning are vividly colorful, and the raucous calls of the boat tailed grackles add to its charm. I have spent many a early morning on the porch with a cup of coffee, and watched the sun rise over the marsh. Jerry Brandon and his wife make you feel like family, and their pets roaming the halls always made me feel like I was at home. The hotel is close to a hundred years old and is time worn, but clean and inviting. If you want sterile, lack luster accommodations where you are treated like just another fee, go to any of the big chains. If you want a warm unique experience in a place with history, charm, and warmth, stay at the Riverview Hotel.

Overall we did not have a bad experience, it is just as one reviewer said " a mixed bag". To be fair, I had read all the reviews, and we decided to chance it for one night on our way to FL. The idea of staying near the waterfront appealed to me, to have something relaxing to do in the evening. We really enjoyed strolling the waterfront park with fountain, gazebos, and lovely views. I just felt that there is an "air of indifference" at this hotel, beginning with a less-than-enthusiastic welcome at the front desk, and again at check-out. Some of the things that bothered other reviewers, like the worn carpeting, did not bother us. But the filthy microwave and smelly mini-fridge in the common room......inexcusable. We enjoyed the breezy second floor veranda, but as someone said it was dirty, with plywood covering some of the holes in the floor. We tried the coffee at the continental breakfast and it was lukewarm at 7am, which made us wonder if it was left from the day before. Just so many little things that could be corrected with minimal time and money. Overall, we did not regret staying for one night, because of the location, and it did have a certain charm. Just know what to expect before going. If I feel like an innkeeper is really trying to work with what they have, I can overlook a lot of things.....but just did not get that impression here.

and it shows it. Bathroom and A/C are completely modern and up to date and that's about it. Carpet on stairs is very worn. We were upgraded and given a good rate. Management tries but until there is some serious dollars spent, it's old and musty. Continental breakfast was nicely done. Loved the hotel cat and dog. Inadequate electric plug ins in the room. WiFi only works in the lobby. Very convenient location. We want to return to St. Mary's GA as the gateway to the Cumberland Island National Park but we'd probably stay the necessary 2 nights on I-95 and GA 40. B & B's looked inviting in downtown St. Mary's too. Welcome center, Robyn, was exceptionally helpful in helping us plan a return visit to see those horses on that island. Ferry schedule is very limited.

Room Tip: If they are not sold out, they are very accommodating in upgrading room at the lower quoted price.

It's in a terrific location, particularly if you are going to take the ferry to Cumberland Island. It's got some great history and real character.

But it's in need of a lot of attention. Everything is really run down. The porch outside has actual holes in the floors and is filthy. The windows to the rooms that open to the porch have no mechanism for locking them.

The view from some rooms is great. Somebody really ought to buy this place and fix it up. It could be a real treasure.

Some plusses - the owner gave us some free drink coupons for the bar. The bar was fun and the bar tender entertaining, but the drinks were expensive. The lunch they packed for us for our trip to Cumberland was perfect and worth the price.

Big minus - the restaurant on the property is just about the worst we encountered on this trip. Truly horrible. There has got to be someplace else in town that's better.

What a great hotel. Similar to the ones you might find out west. There aren't many of these family run hotels left anymore. It was clean, comfortable, and friendly. You can't beat the location either, right across the street from the ferry to Cumberland Island. We paid the extra fee to have our dog with us. We ate in the cafe and it was great. The local saloon was hoot. There was even music in the park right on the waterfront. This is our third visit, but not our last. We loved it.
