“It doesn't get any better”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

We have only one regret, that we are not cows, with four stomachs, so we could have eaten the whole menu at once! I found this restaurant on Trip Advisor and it is great feeling not to be disappointed esp. since my husband and I went there to celebrate my birthday. Everything about this restaurant is top-notch. The food was unbelievably outstanding. the service just attentive and helpful enough; the decor trendy in a comfortable way (though the Ladies Room could use a hook :) The menu is so exciting, with perfectly balanced flavors, new takes in many cases on classics that really, really work, are not just some chef straining to come up with something new. It doesn't hurt I guess that they cure thier own bacon, smoke thier own meats, make thier own sauce etc. So great care is given to details. AND, the prices are affordable (please don't change!). We had the pork belly small plate with a PERFECT kimchi slaw just hot enough, the pork ribs small plate: huge protion, perfect and no extra fat, the hush puppies which were divine. I simply do not have enough superlatives.....and the collard greens as snacks. We were full and we have hearty appetites. I also splurged on the Hendricks Gin Fizz, which for those who don't know, is the best little kept secret in cocktail land. We cannot wait to go back....as a matter of fact...hmmm....RUN, do not walk to The Bayou if you love southern cuisine.

“Don't miss this place...great food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

The owner of the B&B where we stay in Bethlehem (Morningstar Inn) recommended The Bayou to us. Over the years, she's come to know us quite well and told us we'd like this place. She was spot on--we loved it! We called for reservations, as we were in town for MusikFest and know places get pretty busy. Upon arrival, our party of four was seated immediately. The restaurant is very nicely decorated, was jumping busy, and smelled amazing (always a good sign). We ordered a lot of food and each of us tasted every dish. I would heartily recommend going with a group and ordering several plates to share so you can try as much of the menu as possible. We started with Ty's mac & cheese to share and it was delicious--just full of flavor and cheesy goodness without being too heavy. We also had a plate of the cornbread and it was probably the best I have ever had--we all loved that it was grilled so there was a nice crispy crust on the sweet, moist bread inside. I had a bowl of gumbo and the small plate smoked ribs; my fiance had the shrimp and grits; our friends ordered the fried chicken and catfish. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Our food came out of the kitchen hot. Loved that a number of small plates are offered in addition to the full entrees. Overall, a great big WIN! We hope to make it back to The Bayou again some day. Well done and carry on, dat Bayou!

“First time going Southern!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014

My daughter requested "The Bayou" for her birthday dinner. Six of us went and none of us have ever been there before. Right from the start with the unusual drink menu, to the unusual snack, appetizer and dinner menu everything was awesome. We tried about four of there different apps none of them disappointing. We each tried a drink that we have never had before which were all good. Dinner wise we ordered everything from shrimp to steaks to pulled pork and catfish. It truly was a great experience and I would definitely go back. While leaving I noticed a great back deck that they had which I wish I would of knew about when I made the reservations. A "must stop in" restaurant!!!

“Atmosphere with food and drink to match”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

This is a joint with zero pretension plus sophisticated takes on southern style cuisine that actually pulls it off, and then some. The owners, Cris and Mo, never stop working and their energy and high standards are found in every aspect of the experience: decor, cocktails, service and food. This place is hopping but the bar seats and tables rotated sufficiently that wait times appeared almost non-existent on the Friday we were there. Renovated exposed brick, old timber and tin exude industrial, the ceiling is low enough to keep everything pulled together and the simple furniture fits in perfectly. The outside patio is the spot if you want a less frenetic, quieter scene. We sat at a high top by the bar and soaked up the energy and the band music (yep... live music) as we sipped a house-original, bourbon based cocktail and a craft beer from their well curated list. Bayou also offers an extensive range of liquors and mixers from which they will assemble just about any cocktail you can think of, as well as the several Mo and Chris have developed. The wine list is brief with all fourteen or so choices available by the glass and bottle. The selection is smart, offering enough variety that will satisfy 99.9% of wine drinkers (my wife had a NZ Sauvignon Blanc and an Argentinean Malbec with her food, both up to par. But you don't come here for a glass of Chateau Margaux... you sit down to dinner at The Bayou when you crave perfectly cooked ribs and Mac 'n' Cheese. Ribs cooked tender and almost falling off the bone, but still with enough structure to stay in one piece, coated with caramelized house Q that had crusted perfectly to stand up to the unctuous pork. Just superb. The M n C... macaroni elbows cooked just right with gooey, (yep.... gooey) cheese that was neither dry, nor greasy and runny, and sprinkled throughout with succulent pork bits and a splash of color from baby peas. The hush puppies and dipping sauce were lovely, the spicy shrimp were plump, cooked perfectly and served with a spicy relish. The star of the evening was the Head Cheese. I have devoured offal-based delicacies on several continents, including one memorable dinner at Fergus Henderson's St John in London, and the Bayou delivers a very fine Head Cheese. It does not have the gelatinous wobble that is a feature of many offerings, rather the texture of a coarse country pate with all the inclusions you'd expect. Four generous slices arranged on a board with a wipe of spicy aioli, a relish, and a sprinkle of greens. paired perfectly with my saison. We ended dinner with beignets and coffee. The former were as you'd get all over NOLA: pockets of fried dough liberally sprinkled with powdered sugar and crying out for the latter... coffee ground fresh and poured fresh. The whiskeys we wrapped it all up with were just two of what appeared to be a score or more to choose from. Prices... modest; portions... generous without being over-facing; service... outstanding. We'll be back.
