We've been visiting Mammoth for over 30 years and visit the Devils Postpile Area every year. The Monument itself is great and there are plenty of hiking and walking trails near by. There are nice picnic benches for eating by the San Joaquin River as well. While we've never camped there, the campground looks awesome as it is right next to the river!! A must see place while in town!!

Looking up at the columnar basalt wall made us glad that the vulcanism in the area has died down. This place was boiling and popping not that long ago! Definitely make that effort to hike to the top of the Postpile to see the extraordinary hexagonal "paving" formed by the cooling columns.

Fabulous piece of geology on a good 5 mile hike. Not spoilt by visitors. Well worth the effort of visiting.

Caught the shuttle which was about $8 which took you up to the 9 attractions that are only accessible with the shuttle bus get off at a sight you want to see then walk the treks to the next shuttle drop off pick up point.

I've been to the Postpile numerous times and every time I am absolutely amazed by the stunning natural wonder. It's well worth the short 0.4 mile hike and, if you can go the extra distance, well worth the hike to the top of the Postpile.
