We did many hikes while in Mammoth, but this was by far our favorite.
The Mammoth Crest Trail takes you above timberline, to the approximate boundary of John Muir Wilderness and Ansel Adams Wilderness. All of the Mammoth Lakes, and the beautiful vistas of the High Sierra are visible below, while the terrain becomes more and more Martian-like the further up you go.
The trailhead is at Lake George, and the hike is roughly 8-9 miles.
