Just before the entrance booth that leads to Devil's Postpile, Minaret Vista has a good-sized parking lot and even restrooms. Steps lead up to a viewing plateau with information displays that tell you exactly what you are looking at in the west. Popular at sunset, it offers great photo ops when the time is right and, indeed, folks with cameras mounted on tripods are present. On a calm evening, I was struck by how quiet it was, far away from any freeway or plane noise. One could hear an owl hoot. The very next day at dusk, clouds threatening a snowstorm loomed above, creating an even more dramatic shot. Goes without saying to dress properly! Look east, too, towards Nevada, and a another angle of Mammoth Mountain.
