“Peaceful Sunset”
Review of Minaret Vista

Minaret Vista
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 October 2013

Just before the entrance booth that leads to Devil's Postpile, Minaret Vista has a good-sized parking lot and even restrooms. Steps lead up to a viewing plateau with information displays that tell you exactly what you are looking at in the west. Popular at sunset, it offers great photo ops when the time is right and, indeed, folks with cameras mounted on tripods are present. On a calm evening, I was struck by how quiet it was, far away from any freeway or plane noise. One could hear an owl hoot. The very next day at dusk, clouds threatening a snowstorm loomed above, creating an even more dramatic shot. Goes without saying to dress properly! Look east, too, towards Nevada, and a another angle of Mammoth Mountain.

We love Mammoth, and the Minarets make an impressive background to a beautiful family picture. Minaret Vista is a short drive from the town, and this vista is just off the parking lot After we went here, we went to Devil's Postpile to have a nice hike.

In summer and fall, this is a great place to gather and watch the sun dip behind the minarets. In early to mid September, sunset is lined up perfectly behind them. It gets windy: bring jacket, hat and even gloves. BRING THE CAMERA. Don't forget to climb the small rise on the other side of the parking lot to look east toward the White Mountains as the pink glow spreads.

I am sure that the view from here would have been more impressive if not being effected by the smoke from the Yosemite fire. The view of Mammoth mountain was good though

Well worth the drive - offers a closer and perhaps better view of the ridge than you get from Mammoth Mt gondola, and feels far wilder
