It is almost impossible for any place to score an A+, but Tamarack Lodge did exactly that. We have visited Twin Lakes for years, staying in a condo in Mammoth and one of my lifelong dreams was to stay at this quaint, historic lodge someday. My sweetheart booked a weekend for us the first part of December. First of all, the setting is magical. Both lakes were frozen over and snow was everywhere. We have also visited the lakes in the summer and I truly believe this lodge is a DREAM year-round. More on that in a moment.

After running from our car into the lobby in the freezing cold wind, we were greeted by Jordyn, a really warm young man who evidently loves his job and he offered us hot cider while we took care of checking in. He was also training a new young lady on check in (who was fabulous) and he was an incredible trainer. Our check-in process was seamless. The roaring fire in the fireplace just steps away from check in , hot cider, offer to make dinner reservations for us and the darling little 4'x3' (that's a guess on size) bar was adorable. We asked if we could come to the bar around 4:30pm for a cocktail and Jordyn said it wasn't open till 5, but if we really wanted to, he would see what he could do to maybe open a bit earlier for us. WOW. We didn't take advantage of his kind offer, but it was evident we were being treated like VIPs. And it was evident that they probably give that service as their "standard". You just can't "buy" warmth and grace these days in service and Jordyn and everyone at that lodge during our stay had it in spades.

After we arrived to our Cabin (we stayed in Cabin 8 and loved it), we had a phone call from the front desk to make sure our room was satisfactory. Our room had a wonderful franklin stove that put out more than enough heat (and was adjustable), a mini kitchenette with coffee, fridge, stove and microwave, bistro table and chairs for dining and every cabin has its own wi-fi. There is no TV, BUT they have monitors and DVD's available for borrow in the main lodge and we loved cozying up one night with a movie in our cabin. Bathroom is almost painfully small (as in no real place to put toiletry kits for two) , but you have to remember, these are cabins - it's part of the experience. There are other trade-offs and it's a minor inconvenience. They also feature Aveda products, which were a lovely and classy touch.

Our first night, we went to the little bar in the lobby and ordered our favorite cocktails before dinner and enjoyed sipping it in front of the fireplace and visiting with other guests. Dinner in the restaurant (make reservations- it's very small and they book quickly with lodge guests and non lodge guests) was delicious. Service was a bit painfully slow and it is rather expensive, but you cannot beat the ambiance and feel of dining there. The food was very good.

While many folks go to Mammoth to ski, we went for some R&R. I'm blown away at the options at Tamarack. During the summer when we visited (the lakes, not the lodge), one can go out on a boat, walk around the lake, hike, etc. During the winter, you cannot walk around the lakes (trails closed for cross country skiing) but you can take other paths and hike and next time we are going to try cross country skiing, perhaps. Everything is quiet and peaceful. We saw a bald eagle, coyote and the sound of silence and nature was healing. But beyond all this is how the staff made us feel every second we were there. We recommend even getting dinner to go in town and bringing it back to the cabin to sit and enjoy or taking it to the main lobby. Our stay also included continental breakfast, and they did a great job with that as well: hardboiled eggs, various muffins, fresh whole fruit, bagels you can toast, butter, cream cheese, apple butter, cereal variety, oatmeal, coffees, teas, etc. We got our breakfast each day and just sat on the sofa in the lobby in front of fire and enjoyed easing into our day. The breakfast was well tended-to by staff and they kept it replenished and fresh.

The whole feel of Tamarack Lodge brings one back to the type of outdoor experiences that perhaps happened generations ago. One returns to no cell phones, no need for TV, and is forced to connect with nature and the person they are with with games (we brought some and also the front desk loans those out, too) and other things we just don't do or "see" any more. It forces us to get back to our heart and what's important. I highly recommend this place and not only will we be back, we want to come back several times a year and bring our family, too.

Oh, and PS: Because Tamarack is affiliated with another major resort in main Mammoth, you have guest privileges at their other property, including pool and jacuzzi use, if you want!

Room Tip: in winter, request a cabin closest to lobby- you won't want to walk far to get dinner, breakfast, games,DVDs in freezing winter wind.

My family and I will be back. We had a great time. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The 2 bedroom cabin was even more than what I expected. The village in Mammoth was quaint and they had great caramel apples.

We loved coming to Twin Lakes during the summer and winter seasons, but I was surprised to find out how reasonable it was to stay at Tamarack Lodge in our own cabin with a view of the lake. The cabin had a gas fireplace and a kitchen and everything we needed. Staff was top notch and friendly. There are places to walk in the snow and meet folks. We saw a bald eagle outside the lodge when we drove in. This is going to be my first choice for traveling up North to the mountains from now on.

Room Tip: Request a cabin by the lake/parking lot.

I recently stayed at the Tamarack Lodge for three nights. and had a wonderful time. The location is beautiful, surrounded by mountains and overlooking the lake. I stayed in the main lodge, and was immediately greeted by Samantha, who was courteous and helpful. The lodge is very quiet and relaxing and I cannot recommend enough to anyone thinking of staying there. I look to forward to returning possibly in the spring, but was very impressed.

Tamarack is a superb, classic mountain lodge, sitting on a glacial lake, surrounded by mountains, deep in the pines. Built in the 1924, it is unique in that it retains - - no embraces - - the relaxed hospitality of that classic era. This small, intimate lodge is set far away from the strip mall, road-stop ambiance that characterizes most lodging in Mammoth Lakes California. Lodging consists of charming, well appointed rooms on the second floor, or cozy cabins set a few steps from the main lodge. I stayed in the main lodge. My room had a great view of frozen Lake Mary and the cliffs beyond. The bed was very, very comfortable. Evenings were spent in the main reception downstairs, a room with a great fireplace, overstuffed leather sofas and chairs. Wine and spirits are served while you warm up and chat with your fellow lodgers about the adventures of the day. On the first floor one also finds the Lakefront Restaurant, one of the best places to dine in the Sierra.

An ample, delicious continental breakfast is included and served in the main reception. Plenty to get you going, although I do wish they opened the Lakefront for a full cooked breakfast in the morning.

Before booking, keep in mind, the Tamarack is NOT THE WESTIN! If you want hot tubs, outside swimming pools, a slope-side location and flat screen 4K HDTV, this is not for you! (Although you will have access to the pool and hot tub at Mammoth Mountain Inn, and the Tamarack Cross Country center is right here!) And, in early season, the shuttle busses to the slopes do not run all the way out here, so you'll need to take your car back and forth to the slopes, at least until late December. Also, most of the lodge rooms (which are very reasonably priced) are not ensuite...the shower is down the hall (there is s sink in the room). For me, this only adds to the ambiance of this classic lodge, but it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Finally, the staff is a delight. They all work hard to make your holiday a special, memorable experience.

I recommend Tamarack over any other lodge in Mammoth and over most in the Sierra. It truly is unique in this area. Go. Relax. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking Lake Mary.
