“Nice Hotel Yet Some Problems”
Reviewed 2 January 2009

First we arrived to a beautiful building and great bell man services. After we checked-in we entered the room it was quite beautiful and just our liking. The view was a ball room. I would of prefered a city view though. Overall it was a good stay and a nice hotel.

  • Liked — Nice clean room and freindly staff.

I stayed at the Bellevue twice. It is relatively expensive; the decor of the brunch room and the restaurant are fabulous. The rooms are quite stuffy and old, the building is "under-elevatored" and there is no impressive lobby. All in all, not a bad experience, but there are probably better options in downtown Philadelphia.

We were really looking forward to our stay in the Park Hyatt, based on the hotel website. We booked online and received a (correct) confirmation by email. However, when we checked in, we were informed that we were sharing a room with two strangers. When we said this was wrong, the staff treated us as if it was our mistake and were extremely offhand. At no point did it occur them to apologise for the mix-up or the time it took to put it right. The room was quite nice - very small but well decorated on the whole. However, instead of the city view we had requested we were on the floor of the conservatory, looking into the central space but with a tall screen immediately outside our window so that we didn't even get any of the secondhand light from the glass roof several floors above. The breakfast is quite nice (although they can't poach eggs properly) but definitely not worth the high price and the service is very slow. The location of the hotel is good, but Philly is so small you can pretty much stay anywhere without too much inconvenience - don't stay here unless you have no other choice.

My husband, daughter and I stayed at this hotel for six nights.
Origionally, we had a basic room with falling plaster and poorly cleaned but, after one night, we were upgraded to a deluxe queen room which was lovely. It was a much bigger room and in good condition.
I like this hotel.
The staff were very helpful.
The restaurant was lovely.
There are several shops on the ground floor and a good food court on the level below which makes it easy to grab a snack or cheap meal.

  • Liked — Love the staff and the central position
  • Disliked — The rooms do need a facelift

The Park Hyatt is a unique property. It is an older property. It has two things going for it: First, the attached gym is the best gym attached to a hotel of any hotel I have ever stayed at. If you like working out in the morning, this is the hotel for you. The gym occupies four floors and includes a pool, basketball court, and more treadmills - stairmasters - ellipticals than one can count. Something like 25 or more treadmills, similar numbers of other equipment. There is also a nice cafe attached to the club for a light workout breakfast.

The second feature of this hotel is the location. This is at the Bellvue, so you get the old Philadelphia charm. There's a Starbucks downstairs and The Palm is in the same building. So the dining and coffee are superb. The bar at the top of the hotel is very nice. The best shopping streets and bars in Philadelphia are a short, safe walk away. Great location. Near City Hall.

Tips: Ask for an interior room. Rooms on the exterior have lots of street noise -- very important if your stay goes over Friday or Saturday night.

I have stayed in the suites which are in the interior and are superb.

Room service is excellent and not too expensive.

The beds are very comfortable. The service level throughout the hotel is quite good.

The drawbacks to this hotel are that it is an older property - so rooms are large but baths small. This turns off some travelers. But if you like to exercise, this is the place to stay.

Our first visit to Philadelphia as adults was great. The AAA special with breakfast was outstanding- make sure to dine in the XIX at least once - beautiful restaurant.
We received a complimentary upgrade to a Park King Deluxe- very large well appointed room with wet bar, amrble bathroom and a nice balcony.
The adjacent Sporting Club gym is included at no charge for guests- we spent a couple of hours running and working out. The pool is under maintenance but will be open to guests soon.
Overall, an excellent couple hotel.

I agree with a lot of the reviews here. The hotel is old, and it shows. You can tell that at one point, it represented the height of luxury, but the high-quality furnishings are now visibly worn and faded. Like many Philadelphia hotel rooms that I've seen (except for the Rittenhouse Hotel, which has my favorite rooms), the standard rooms are rather small, with extremely small bathrooms. The worst issue is the elevators -- incredibly creaky and slow. When I stayed during the weekend, there were a couple of weddings going on at the hotel, and during those events, the wait for the elevator could sometimes take up to 10 minutes. That is just ridiculously long. It made me late for a dinner.

Nevertheless, the thing that made the stay worthwhile was the free access to the outstanding gym, the Sporting Club at the Bellevue. This is a huge athletic club with a pool, basketball court, running track, and large fitness area, all connected by a 4th-floor breezeway to the hotel. This is by far the best gym access for a hotel I've ever had (even including the Grand Hotel in Minneapolis, which also has an amazing gym). Because of this, I was willing to forgive a lot of the other issues with the hotel.

The breakfast in the "XIX" cafe in the morning was decent, if unspectacular. The staff seemed generally friendly and helpful. The one odd thing about the hotel setup is that because the reception and concierge are on the 19th floor, and in a side room off the main atrium, I pretty much never saw them after I checked in. It made for a rather impersonal experience, which I thought the Park Hyatt brand (smaller, more intimate hotels) was designed to avoid.

Oh, one last point for Hyatt Diamond members: as a Diamond member, I automatically received a bottle of red wine in the room as a welcome amenity. This wine, however, was some of the worst free wine I've ever had (and that's saying something); it was pretty much undrinkable. So don't go expecting you'll get a nice bottle of wine once you get there.
