Owner description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

“Huge and creepy”

It was really fun to learn about the history of this penitentiary. I came on a weekday, so there weren't that many people visiting. I ended up walking some of the cell blocks by myself, which was an interesting experience. I kept looking behind me to see if anyone else is there! It can be a bit creepy.

The audio tour would have been good, except the headphones were terrible.

Go to the bathroom somewhere else. There is no indoor restrooms, but portable potties are available.

“One of the best things I didn't expect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

This is a stale dated review but one of the best tours I've ever took. Recommended by my wife. She had to twist my arm a little to go. Found it to be an intereting place. Very good tour. Have also toured Alcatraz. If you're in the neighborhood and have the time, do it.

This place is amazing. They give you lots of background on your self guided tour. You can spend as much time as you would like touring. It is a work in progress but you still get a look at most of the facility.

“Off the beaten path!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

This was definitely a great place to visit. I enjoyed the audio tour. The location is close to other sites as well. I enjoyed how the focus was on how many people are impacted by imprisonment and how the thought of penitence was the intentional purpose of the prison. Creepy also.

“Grim but fascinating”

The prison has a very intense vibe. There is an excellent audio guide, and helpful staff everywhere to answer questions. Highly recommended.
