Owner description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

You can do the self guided tour so it's at your own pace. The building and how it's made amazes me. You get a lite piece of history of what it would have been like plus you get to see Al capones cell. Worth a stop on the bus.

“AWESOME SCARE”
Reviewed 6 June 2014 via mobile

If you are in the area in the month of October the Eastern Pent is one of the best Halloween attractions. It is unbelievable what they do to this place. Me, my wife and two other couples went at this time and it scared the check out of all of us. Lines can tend to get really long the closer u get towards Halloween especially on weekends so my advice go in the middle of the week if possible and middle of the month as well.

“Interesting history in downtown Philly”
Reviewed 3 June 2014 via mobile

Had 1.5 days to explore Philly with my Mom and sister. Our goal was to see something historic, rocky steps and statue and something different. Well this covered the historic and different.

What's interesting is the Pen has areas that are falling apart. They did not restore it on purpose. It's kind of creepy. We spent a lot more time there than we expected. It was very interesting but very empty. Don't expect to see furnished rooms except Al Capone's room. One room had a tree growing through it. We did an audio tour and went at our own pace. It's also interesting that this was in downtown Philly.

If you have 90min to see something different then you might want to check it out if this is your thing.

“Extremely interesting historical look at prisons of that day”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Attempt at building a tunnel was inventive. High profile prisoners, the most notable was Al (Scarface) Capone, who was eventually released from Eastern State. Inmate living conditions were very difficult with very small cells and not much to do. Some of the inmates turned to art. Some of the art was amazing and some was creepy. Another great thing is that the Prison is close to several restaurants and other attractions: The Rodin Museum with "The Thinker" (displayed outdoors), the Philadelphia Museum of Art with the steps that Rocky used to run up and down to get ready for his big fight and, even a statue of Rocky. Great photo opportunities all over the place!
