“Very nice once you get past the parking”
Reviewed 27 April 2010

My boyfriend and I recently spent a weekend in Philadelphia and chose to stay at Penn's View. Neither of us had been there before, so we were happy to locate the hotel and pulled in front to unload our bags, as the hotel's website advised to do.

Well. The hotel itself doesn't have a parking lot, but recommends parking in the paid lot next door ($42 for the weekend). We didn't even get a chance to get our bags out of the car when the attendant for the parking lot rudely yelled at us and told us that only people eating at the restaurant and wishing to have valet parking could pull in front of the hotel. God forbid we had known the city better and wanted to go park elsewhere! There were 3 or 4 gentlemen working in the parking lot and it was so utterly disorganized; each one told us something different ("Park here! Give us your key" "Why did you park there? I don't need your key") and I was afraid it was a bad omen for the hotel stay when I literally wanted to cry before we even got into the place!

So: expect trouble if you arrive during restaurant hours and/or want to park somewhere else.

Once we got the parking situation settled and got into the hotel, however, it was fantastic. The staff was very nice (the gentleman in the morning was particularly nice; I think his name was Antonio?), check-in was no problem, and our room was very nice (and different!). The continental breakfast was very good - fruit, muffins, scones, cereal, hard boiled eggs, waffles, bagels and the location of the hotel was perfect for visiting the historical sties; we were able to walk to the visitor's center and other sites. They have free wi-fi, but we were unable to get it to work with the iPad.

Aside from the parking, the only other bad thing to happen is this: the bathrooms have very thin walls. If your neighbors decide to do very loud, indecent things in there at 8 am while you're trying to get ready for your day...you'll hear everything. The fan for the room is pretty loud, so we were able to mostly drown out their moaning with that.

I recently took my daughter to Philly for her 13th Birthday and it was the 1st time in the city for both of us. I chose Penn's View because of the review I read on Trip Advisor and they could not be more correct. The Penn's View was a beautiful hotel, in a perfect location and they have Antonio. I read the review about Antonio and am pleased to report he is as helpful as can be. He helped make our trip more pleasant and memorable than I had expected. Our room was spacious and decorated beautifully as well as very clean. The location at the end of Market St was excellent, we were within a short walk to everywhere we wanted to go and the immediate neighborhood offered a lot of unique shops and great eateries. The continental breakfast the Penn's View offers was excellent as well, from the fresh fruit to the waffles shaped liked the Liberty Bell. All in all we had an excellent experience and can't wait to go back.

The hotel is a bit old, but very charming and the rooms very nice – Jacuzzi and fire place. The restaurant downstairs is one of the better once around. Service was excellent.

My hubby and I stayed at the Penn's view for two nights while attending the Flower Show 2010. This hotel is so beautiful with a classical European decor. The hotel has a very warm appeal making you feel like you are walking into a Victorian styled b&b, except you are in a hotel and you have complete private rooms. The staff were polite, the room and bathroom were clean and the free continental breakfast was on point. This hotel is nestled in the Society Hill section of Center City Philadelphia right at Penn's Landing. The location is so perfect and everything you need is a few steps away. Taxis are everywhere, but why waste money the 17 bus is two steps away and will take you to the liberty bell, convention center, the Gallery and anywhere on Market Street; the 25 bus only 2 blocks away can take you to the River View movie theater; and the EL train will take you anywhere in the city. There are like 3 Ritz theaters in walking distance. We ate at the Continental restaurant right at 2nd and Market, oh my world the lobster mac and cheese was incredible. And don't let me get started on the night life. Overall, this hotel was the bomb! and we will definitely go back.

Originally our trip to Philadelphia was to be all business but we decided to extend a night so we would have a day to enjoy the city as tourists. We wanted to choose a hotel with a good location - one with easy access to roads out of the city but within walking distance to some of the areas of interest in the city. Penn's View was the best choice for this. I had vacillated on the decision to stay at Penn's View Hotel based on some of the reviews posted here on Trip Advisor as well as some of the images of the rooms at the hotel. I tend to prefer a very contemporary style hotel and was concerned that Penn's View would be a bit too fussy and ornate for my taste. I decided not to pre book a room and wait until we arrived to see the accommodations in person. The rooms were very nice. A bit Federal in style but not overly. All in all very attractive. We booked a standard queen room the first night and upgraded to a premium queen for the second night. The standard was fine, a very nice room with a large marble bath and a very comfortable bed. The premium queen, however, was FABULOUS! Fireplace (gas, but still, a lovely touch for a couple of rainy days), large room, very comfortable bed, and the kicker, in the bathroom was an enormous jacuzzi bathtub! I never wanted to leave! I also checked out the gym while I was there but opted to go for a run outside when I realized they didn't have a treadmill. And we had a fantastic dinner in the restaurant, too. All in all just a really lovely little hotel and a fabulous mini vacation.

Oh, we hadn't pre booked, as I said, and were quoted the full room rate when we showed up in person. When I mentioned I had seen a much lower rate online they graciously offered the discounted price, though. For both rooms.
Standard queen rack rate $189 online price/price offered $110
Premium queen rack rate $249 online price/price offered $129

Travel on business to Philadelphia on a regular basis from Scotland and always find the Penns View Hotel a little home from home. Antonio and all the staff are excellent. Bar and restaurant have lovely service and nice Italian Food. Rooms are cosy. One advantage is close proximity to Philadelphia City Centre.

Well recommended on business or on vacation.

Lovely hotel, very quaint. The look of the rooms is more like a B and B. Great view of the Ben Franklin Bridge. EXTREMELY helpful front desk staff. Would definitely stay there again. Continental breakfast was great - make your own waffles, fruit, yogurt, pastries...something for everyone. The restaurant is good for the wine list but the food is not good. Do not waste your money on the food.
