“Great Value in a Great Location”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

This hotel is in an excellent location. It is walking distance to the convention center, Reading Market, Liberty Bell, and most historical sites. It is also walking distance to many great restaurants and bars.

The hotel has no restaurant but does serve breakfast and snacks. The continental breakfast was good and included bagels, good local pastries, cereal, and fruit. And the breakfast hours were very convenient, and breakfast was open late on weekends. The snacks were the pastries from breakfast and fruit which was a really nice touch.

The rooms and bathrooms are on the small side but well designed, so that there is a closet and small fold out desk. Most historic hotels in older buildings have smaller rooms, so that is to be expected. There is free wifi in the rooms which is nice. Overall, the room was clean and comfortable.

The staff is very friendly and helpful with recommending all sorts of restaurants and places to go see. I will definitely stay at this hotel again if I'm back in Philadelphia.

The Alexander is our favorite place to stay when we visit Philadelphia. It is centrally located with many great restaurants and cafes nearby. It is close to the Avenue of the Arts with the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center and many theaters nearby. We take the train from the airport and walk the few blocks from the Market East stop to the hotel. A taxi from the airport to the hotel is a flat $30. The hotel itself is well managed with knowledgable and friendly hosts at the desk. The rooms are small, simply furnished and clean. The breakfast buffet is fresh and healthy. There is a small gym and wifi.

You won't find a more central location in Center City.

The staff is extremely friendly. The room had lots of light, was tastefully furnished and very cozy.

There were so many bread and pastry choices at the free breakfast buffet I was completely unable to make up my mind.

If you arrive hungry (or get hungry during your stay) there is a wonderful restaurant/bar called TRIA directly across Spruce Street.

I would definitely stay here next time I come back to Philly.

The Alexander Inn is conveniently located, altho a healthy walk to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Great nearby restaurants, shopping, parks, attractions. The hotel is very clean, very comfortable, although the room we had for a one night stay (standard queen size) was a little small. A better choice, for a multi-day stay, would be the rooms with two beds. The breakfast, in a very lovely room, provided nice ample choices (no hot food, but there were hard boiled eggs), and the staff was very accommodating. The elevator is small, and slow, but it is NOT a modern hotel. That also explains why the bathrooms in some of the rooms were essentially carved out of closets and are not always spacious or efficiently designed (see Aprildon6 comment about the shower).

Room Tip: The two bed rooms are larger, even if you only need one bed; Rooms facing 12th Street are brighter.

We spent 3 nights at the Alexander and were very pleased with our choice. Terrific location; clean, comfortable room; and staff was very helpful with suggestions and directions. We didn't need a car, as it is conveniently located to downtown sites and the train station. The breakfast was an added bonus.

This was my third stay at the Alexander Inn. Flew into PHL and took the train to Market East. Just a few blocks walk, and you're there. If you're spending your time in center city, you don't need a car. You can walk, subway or cab it anywhere.

The rooms are simple and clean. You can get relative silence by closing the window and turning on the AC. My only complaint is that the shower creeps water all over the bathroom floor through the light curtain.

Desk staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast is included and average. There's a business center for printing boarding passes (for free) and a small gym. The elevator is slowish, but the place has a great charm. This is my go-to value hotel in Philly.

My family and I stayed at the Alexander Inn for two nights while we were on a nine-day college tour with our 17 year old son. The Alexander proved to be everything and more than we had read in the other positive reviews. The owners and staff are helpful, efficient, and consistently friendly extroverts. Every space in the hotel is well thought out and beautiful. While we found the hallways and our room tight, they are so well designed that the tightness added to the overall character and delight of the space. Breakfast is well done and we all appreciated that fruit was available throughout the day. The neighborhood is regenerating, energetic, safe, and within easy walking distance of Philadelphia's beautiful downtown and historic sites. Parking was convenient and reasonably priced. And despite all of these wonderful attributes, rates at the Alexander are a bargain compared to other Downtown Philadelphia hotels and inns.

Room Tip: The end rooms with two double beds have a wonderful light quality, with windows on two sides, includ...
