“Gracious, not fussy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

I'm giving five stars to the Alexander Inn for its winning combination of quality and value. For the price, the gracious (not fussy, not precious) ambiance of the place -- all warm browns, tans and crimsons; comfortable bed and spacious room; friendly but noninvasive staff; decent if not stellar breakfast; and trendy neighborhood (now with the stellar vegan restaurant Vedge) can't be beat! Just a few minor quibbles: the bedsheets smelled strongly of bleach, the bedside lamp was not adjustable for reading, and the TV in the breakfast room was annoying. Still, these are noted mostly to help you see that I'm paying attention. After this weekend's stay, we're more likely than ever to consider a weekend jaunt to Philly with a stay at the Alexander in every season.

The Alexander Inn in Center City Philadelphia, USA offers travelers of all-likes (from stylish gay men staying to be near the nightlife tucked into the historic district, business travelers in the know, and friends and family with young children) an unbeatable location to make meetings or explore the immediate surroundings (a neighborhood with plenty of dining options, unique shops, and a nightlife and entertainment scene that is world class).

The historic structure is kept meticulously clean, and it is very apparent that the management team has invested in updating and maintaining the property to meet the highest of expectations.

The welcome was very warm and the GM John Crochi even offered advice in finding current deals for the wardrobe items I was needing to find quickly.

The halls are lined with historic images that offer further understanding of the neighborhood and city of Philadelphia's contributions to American Culture, much less the founding of the Country.

The room offered a bay window with unbeatable view. The furniture was kept in immaculate condition, and the red/gold bedspread with matching bolsters added a warm elegance to the guest room.

The bed was very comfortable and the alarm clock was easily adjusted (often a challenge).

The in-room air conditioner was unobtrusively located and sure would be fine seasonally. Given the cold temperatures of the day, the heating did the best it could, and I was not able to find a way to adjust higher.

The bathroom offered a perfectly hot and strong shower, guest amenities where higher quality, and attention to housekeeping detail was evident.

A continental breakfast was offered as well as a 24 hour gym (which I didn't use). Anyone who would like the authenticity of experiencing Philadelphia as a local, with the assurance of modern comfort and warm hospitality, The Alexander Inn can not be beat.

Room Tip: Great photos from the bay windows of Guest Room 404 with stellar views of the Philadelphia skyline i...

I choose the Alexander Inn based on Tripadvisor reviews. What a great recommendation! Just as other reviewers have said: great location (walking distance to almost everything), great price, nice accommodations, and helpful staff. It was cozy like a bed-and-breakfast. I would highly recommend the Alexander Inn to my friends.

Living in NJ and working in NYC I have visited Philly a few times on day trips. This visit was for business and for a week. The stay makes me want to return for pleasure as opposed to business. Philadelphia is a great town. The Alexander Inn is a great place to stay. The rooms, service, staff and neighborhood features are great. But it is the staff that really shines here. They are extremely mindful of their guest's needs. They claim to be a boutique hotel, well I am not sure of what that means to you, but it felt like home away from home. I will close this with the greeting that I gave the front desk upon returning each evening, "Honey, I'm home!", said with sincerity in acknowledgment of the wonderful staff.

Room Tip: Although the restaurant is only open for continental breakfast I gave it a high rating for two reaso...

We spent 3 nights here as part of our family vacation. We arrived in Philadelphia by train and cabbed it to the hotel. The day we arrived was National Coming Out Day so the roadways around the hotel were closing to prepare for the party.
The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from Independence Hall / Liberty Bell and other tourist attractions. We were in town as the Government Shutdown was happening and the front desk staff were super helpful helping us plan alternatives to what we had planned to visit.
Our room was spacious enough for 2 people and well appointed. The bathroom was a decent size, though we did have an issue with the shower drain constantly clogging. We reported it, but it wasn't fixed during out stay.
Breakfast is in a room off the lobby and there is ample selection of bagels, toast and danishes along with cereal and fresh fruit. All is served with tea, juice and coffee. There are not a lot of tables, so it's prudent to be patient or to take your breakfast back to the room with you.
We had a great stay at the Alexander Inn and I would recommend it to other people visiting Philadelphia.

Room Tip: Request a high up room as you will hear some noise from the street.

We stayed just one night but had great time. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Their suggestions for drinks or dining were just what we asked for. We would definitely stay here again. The continental breakfast had a lot to offer. Including waffles. As for location you can walk to Independence Hall just remember to get tickets. We didn't and could not get in.

We were six women sharing three rooms at the Alexander Inn. The location is ideal in Center City, Philadelphia. Our rooms at the end of the corridor looked onto the street so they were bright. The room was commodious with two double beds, two chests of drawers and two comfortable chairs in the bow window. The bathroom is small but had everything you need. The hanging area outside of the bathroom is ample and there is a small fridge in that space. The breakfast room is very nice with couches and comfortable chairs. The breakfast is ample for a continental. It includes two juices, coffee, decaf and tea. There is a selection of cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit (available all day), a selection of breads, English muffins, toaster waffles, scones, coffee cake. There are also hard boiled eggs.

The decor is attractive with interesting prints on the walls.

But the real attraction of the Alexander Inn is the staff. Everyone was attentive, patient, helpful, and just plain nice. It was a joy to be guests there. I recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Rooms numbered 01 are spacious.
