“Great Deal at this simple Hilton!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2010

Really good deal, stayed mid-week and got a huge, quiet and very comfortable modern room for less than a hostel. Nice helpful staff to boot.
The area is a little shady at night, but nothing more than a few panhandlers. Very close to the wonderful "Reading Terminal Market" and the convention center, plus chinatown is just a skip across the road.

This hotel is located in china town and convenient to downtown but the neighborhood is horrible. There is a subway across the street, and a bus depot, as well a Wawa and I do not recommend walking out of the hotel after midnight. I was traveling with my husband and his 12yr old daughter who was visiting us from Europe, and when we would walk down the street I made sure she stayed between us the whole time. Mind you I come from Brooklyn, NY, and I wasn't comfortable. The day we got there while waiting for the elevator some guy came up behind us to sell us a gold chain he said he found. While walking to our room there were crab legs all through the hallway from someones room service and the following morning they were still there. When we got into the room the shower mat/towel was on the floor and had blood on it, as well as the shower curtain. I had placed a do not disturb sign on my door, and had house keeping knock on my door anyway at 9:00am. I never got a chance to eat at the hotel because there was not enough seating and after waiting to talk to a maitre'd for over 20 mins was told I would have to wait a 30 mins or more to be seated. Seriously the list goes on, but I do not have enough room.

I got in at the Hilton Garden for an incredible price (below $80) on hotwire. It was wonderful, the bed was a thick cloud, I had more pillows than I could ever use, and a giant TV. After wondering Philly all day, it was exciting to get back to that comfortable bed.

Spent 5 nights here while we did our best to soak up all Philly had to offer. A perfect location for historical sightseeing and museum visiting. Also very close to transportation for sports events. Having Reading Terminal Market next door is an added bonus. Initial check-in was not up to expectations (guy mumbled and seemed disgusted with questions) but a 2nd visit and dealing with another person (Amanda or Andrea-sorry I don't remember) made it all better. Both calls for Guest Services were answered very promptly. Yes, it costs to park but that goes hand in hand with the location. Yes, there are unique people on the streets outside-it's a major metropolitan area. We walked everywhere-all hours of the day and night-never felt threatened or uncomfortable. Never approached or panhandled-I can't say that about alot of other cities.

We stayed at the nearby, supposedly "fancier" Philadelphia Marriott for a conference, and everything went wrong (e.g., room keys didn't work, we had to "commute" 20 minutes just to get to our room, and a few people had an attitude; others were great, I should say). After the conference, we moved to this hotel (the HGI Center City) for a wedding, and in comparison it was lovely, clean, and the staff members were incredibly friendly, polite, and truly helpful. Note that these two hotels are in essentially the same exact location, and the Marriott was double the price per night. Can't beat this place! Don't be dissuaded by the grubby street corner its on (and it is grubby for sure; right by the Chinatown bus stop) -- the inside of the hotel is really beautiful and clean. Plus, you're in the same block as Reading Terminal, and a block away from City Hall. I would recommend this hotel to every visitor to Philly.

We booked this place through hotwire for a short weekend trip. The hotel is well-located in Chinatown, close to the main attractions. The entryway had some free lemon and lime water and cookies. Check-in was was easy. The room looked clean overall. The beds were comfy. On closer inspection, there was dust on the desk and some tiny hairs in the toilet. The enamel in the bathtub was worn. The towels were thin. When we first walked in, the temperature in the room felt like 45 (it was set to 55) and it was 95 outside. We promptly tried to warm it up. This caused a musty smell that invaded our clothing and luggage. Overall, the room was fine. However, definitely more like a 3 star than the 4 stars we were promised by hotwire. Also, we had to wash all our clothes when we got home. Plus of the hotel was a delicious breakfast (free for hilton honors gold or platinum) that included freshly made pancakes, waffles, and eggs. A minus of this hotel was that though it felt completely safe during the day and provided yummy Asian restaurants in the area for dinner, after dark it was very unsafe. We ventured out at 10:30 pm for a quick snack and were met by multiple homeless people so went back to the hotel and got a snack at the hotel's shop. All in all, a fine hotel for our needs and would probably stay again for a nice low price, but don't expect 4 stars.
