A quick stop but a must visit -It is on the national register of historic places. This little street is beautiful with the smallest homes I've ever seen. It looked like there is a tour offered by docents in period costumes but I didn't have time to listen in. Sounded fascinating from a distance and I wish I had more time to go through the homes and shop. There is a lot in the area so just because this is a quick stop don't dismiss it. Plenty of cute shopping and old buildings to gawk at on 2nd and 3rd.

Even though most houses are private there are 2 houses for viewing. Easily one of the most beautiful streets in Philly and America for that matter. I love this little Alley it's a great part of Philly's history!

Right in the heart of Philadelphia is our nation's oldest residential street called Elfreth's Alley. Beautifully maintained and a bit of an oasis among the metro area. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, numerous artisans and craftsmen resided on Elfreth’s Alley, often living and working in the same building. Like stepping back a hundred years or so.

While this is not a long visit, it is worth the trip. The alley itself is not very long and there actually only 2 addresses that are open for tours. Most of the addresses are private homes, but it is still a nice stroll and a short walk from the Betsy Ross house site.
