Owner description: You can find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier here. This too, in colonial times, was where enslaved Africans were once held before being sold, and it has also served as a burial ground for white and black victims of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic.

This was a great find that we saw by accident. It is a nice park with a lot of history (war memorial is in the center) and as it was a nice day, many people out enjoying the grass and benches. There are a lot of flowers and other things to have a relaxing time.

We discovered Washington Square Park on the way to the Liberty Bell and it is a great park with lots of grassy areas for kids to run, interesting historic monuments, good seating and lots of space. There were squirrels galore which entertained the kids but we did need to remind them that the squirrels can have rabies so a bite would be very unpleasant. This is so close to the Liberty Bell and other local attractions that it would be a great place for lunch for visitors - there are a number of street food vendors within a block.

Great park to learn about Penn's plan for the city. Also, contains some interesting history about the bodies that lie beneath the park, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a powerful experience.

Washington Square is not too far from the main attractions of Philly and if worst a little time. The park wasn't very crowded when I visited it, but is was December. The point of going to the park is most likely to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier there. It is a lovely monument and not to ostentatious. So go if you wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the Independence Hall area. It is worth it and the awesome Anthenaeum is just off the square.

If you want tranquility on a bright Autumn day then Washington Square Park is for you. Wonderful season changing colours in the trees and crisp air surrounds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the US Revolution. A statue of George Washington is the main focal point along with the Eternal Flame. Flat ground for easy walking and lots of seating available. The area was also used as a burial place for troops from the Colonial Army.
