I love great Ethiopian food. And fortunately, that's what Ethio Cafe serves up every visit. This humble little spot in West Philly is almost always open. I go for the veggie platter -mounds of lentils, collard greens, chickpeas, cabbage, and green salad all waiting to be scooped up with spongy injera bread. They offer plenty of meat options also. Their prices are extremely reasonable for the quantity of food you receive. Service is friendly and there's always soccer on the TV.

If you don't like spicy food but want to try Ethiopian, this is a good place for you, but I found the food to be bland. I love Ethiopian food and have been to great restaurants in other cities. We went at an odd time, so we were the only people in the restaurant, but the server wasn't very attentive. Fortunately, we were there to take our time and talk, so it gave us the time to do that.

We lived in Ethiopia for 3+ years, so we know good Ethiopian food and were thrilled to find it here. We liked the injera and found all the wots to be quite good. We had several in our group who had never had Ethiopian before and were worried about the food being too spicy. We ordered the yellow splint pea wot and found the vegetable wots not to be spicy, so they were happy. The berbere was wonderfully spicy in the doro wot and others. There was no Kai wot (spicy beef) and there was no option for non-spicy shiro, but the shiro was not super spicy anyway. So, I guess the food was a bit Americanized, OR, they have a hard time getting some of their ingredients. still, it was great! We had a group of 9, all left full, and the bill was about $70 which is really good for Ethiopian food in the US. We were only visiting Philly, but I know others in our group will be returning because of the pleasant surprise of this ethnic gem. (oh, this is a bring your own beer restaurant).

This place was ok a year ago but it has a new owner now. The waitress was rude when we ordered and then never around to refill drinks etc. The food is now more expensive, comes in smaller portions, and tasted very bland. When we poked our head into the kitchen to ask for our bill, we saw that it was extremely filthy. All around one of my worst dining experiences. Avoid at all costs.

Home style Ethiopian right out of the kitchen. (Literally, since the venue is a room and a kitchen) Nothing fancy and not a steal value wise, but solid taste and authentic experience. Other customers seemed to be immigrants.
