In the 1800's people used to picnic in the cemetery and if you visit on a nice day, you'll understand why. It's a pretty, quiet oasis in the city and if you can arrange for a tour there are some amazing stories and history in there among the tombstones. Not on Philly's Top 10 list and a bit out of the way but surprisingly pleasant and interesting.

Laurel Hill Cemetery is as much an outdoor sculpture
garden as it is a traditional cemetery.

Elaborate monuments to the region's famous (politicians,
industrialists, "Titanic" passengers) vie for attention with
memorials to people originally buried in the crypts of
long-shuttered churches, and a heartbreaking number
of small children.

Make certain to visit the grave of legendary sportscaster
Harry Kalas, with its microphone-shaped tombstone,
the stunningly beautiful Berwind monument and, Millionaire's
Row, a mind-boggling collection of mausoleums, each more
elaborate than the one before.

As if all that wasn't enough, there are spectacular views of the
Schuylkill River, and helpful guides who will be pleased to
tell you about the cemetery, its history and its residents.

But Laurel Hill isn't stuck in the past. Scheduled activities include
concerts, films, paranormal investigations and the ever-popular
R.I.P. 5K Run.

And while you're there, make sure to visit Laurel Hill's most famous
fictional resident. That would be Adrian Balboa, wife of Rocky.

All in all, a very lively place.

Speeding down Kelly Drive you see the tops of some headstones and obelisks, but nothing prepares you for the vastness of the Cemetary until you walk through the gates off of Ridge Avenue. I've often overlooked this place to visit until I was met with a gloomy Saturday and nothing to do.

The grounds are beautifully kept and the tour guides are funny and factual. Though there are not more than "local heroes" buried here, the history of Philadelphia is buried with them.

I have been a member of this wonderful historic cemetery which in the back, where General Meade(as in Civil War herro of Gettysburg) rests one gets a spectacular view of the river. Take one of the facinating tours with wonderful historians.

This is one of my most favorite cemeteries. The location is easy to find right off scenic Kelly Drive. The statues, history and grounds are simply awesome. You really feel like you are in a different world. They have a small store and the staff are great to speak to. Very friendly and helpful. You can tell that they are proud to be involved with this very historic landmark. There is so much to see. I had read all about Laurel Hill prior to visiting. And they offer great information to help find certain burial sites. Harry Kalas is there along with (I'm pretty sure) 4 Titanic Survivors. It's a very interesting place. Peaceful. Bathroom facilities too. Thanks for that! Hope you enjoy as much as I did. You guys at Laurel Hill are remarkable people. Thank you!
