“Not as good as I'd hoped for!!!”
Reviewed 15 July 2012 via mobile

This was my first visit here. I arrived about 2:20pm as to miss the lunch rush if any and to insure that yesterdays left overs would be used up. I was asked upon arriving if I had ever been there before. I told him no and that I was interested in a rib brisket combination. I was shown and on the menu and told it came with one side. I was served their 1/2 rack of ribs 6 Pork ribs to be exact ( as far as I know a pig has 14 so I figure I was missing 1) . Although tasty, my half rack of ribs had half wet rub and the other half dry rub as I had requested so as to sample both and 3 small slices of brisket about 3-4 ounces with about a cup of very tasty mac and cheese.....both meats I found very dry and a little tuff as though they were cooked yesterday and reheated today...At $18.00 + with tax and no beverage it seemed steep for that size portion......I'll try again to see if it was just a bad day....I was asked by the woman that brought the food to the table how everything was and I stated the above.....She told me they don't do that and that she would tell "them" about it. I did not expect anything to come of it and I was not disappointed.....lol

“SOME OF THE BEST DAMN BBQ IN THE COUNTRY IS IN OF ALL PLACES, PHILLY!!!”
Reviewed 24 March 2012

The Texas Beef Brisket.....AMAZING!!! The Carolina Pulled Pork....OUTSTANDING!!! The Ribs....TO DIE FOR!! The Sauces (all 4 of them).......INCREDIBLE!!!! All I can say is these guys at Fat Jack's REALLY know what they are doing when it comes to BBQ. Each side dish is better than the next one. THe cornbread is swwet and almost cakelike. The staff is friendly and knowledgable, and the owners themselves came out to talk to every table. When you get into PHilly, go out of your way and find this hidden gem. You will be VERY happy that you did

“Try Breakfast!”
Reviewed 25 January 2012

I've been here several times for dinner and lunch and the other reviews are spot on. Really exceptional. Some of the sides are my favorite but the meat can not be beat. All that said, I had to write about my experience with their new breakfast menu this week. It was AMAZING.

I visited yesterday morning with my son. He got pancakes and I ordered the BIG breakfast bowl. I was honestly blown away. The southern sausage was fantastic and everything was perfectly prepared. Sometimes breakfast food can run a bit bland but not at Fat Jacks. Full of flavor and, frankly, a real bargain. It was so good I grabbed a couple of order of French toast to take home to the family. Just simply awesome stuff and certainly worth the trip. Breakfast is a value too and probably your best bet in Northeast Philly

Be careful though, the food is very heavy so don't look for light options if on a diet.

Well done Glen and the rest of the FJ Staff, well done indeed.

“Best BBQ north of the Carolinas!!! I could eat here everyday!”
Reviewed 11 January 2012

My husband & I consider ourselves somewhat of BBQ affeciandos and we went here to get a gift certificate for my brother & HAD to stay & eat dinner. I got the Georgia Pulled Pork, my husband got the Texas Beef Brisket samiches and we cut them in half & split them. EXCELLENT!!! Our sides were of course slaw cause you can't properly eat BBQ without slaw & the collard greens. Both were outstanding. I went to college in SC & never have I had better greens than these. I'm a trained chef & I have never made greens this good. The atmosphere is VERY casual, like picnic table casual. Very interesting signs & memorabilia on the wall. I had a chance to speak with both owners & they were both VERY nice and Very interested in any feedback. If you are in the neighborhood of Red Lion & the Blvd - GO EAT HERE - you will not be disappointed.

“Great BBQ'd Meats at a Decent Price”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

First off, I am a BBQ meat fan. I truly believe the words of my "ancestors" when they refer to "vegetarian" being an old Indian word (and I'm a semi-old Indian) meaning "can't hunt." I'm a carnivore through and through and appreciate good southern BBQ. With that all said, I was looking forward to trying out Fat Jack's, a BBQ franchise relatively new to Philadelphia.

For the uninitiated, BBQ is VERY different according to region, and the term BARBEQUE is VERY DIFFERENT than what you may mean at home when you "grill" which is NOT "barbequing." Meats as served in BBQ restaurants are typically slow smoked to "cook" the meat, often imbuing a pinkish (but SAFE) interior and a smoky, uniquely tasty flavor. Texas BBQ is different from Memphis BBQ which is different than what Fat Jack's serves which is Carolina-style BBQ. At Fat Jack's, my friend had a "riblet" sandwich which consisted of a few small pork ribs that had been "dry rubbed" with seasonings and mild BBQ "moppin" sauce while I had pulled pork with a spicy BBQ sauce - both served on hamburger-type rolls. I had BBQ beans and I can't remember what my friend had as his side.

Dave was thoroughly enjoying his food as was I. It's fast food style seating so you order, sit and wait (about 5 minutes), get your food and sit and enjoy. The pulled pork was very good - not too "wet" and the included spicy sauce was nice. The coleslaw I'd asked for (to put on top of the meat - it's a regional thing you don't have to do) was only fair. It's the ubiquitous slightly sweet type I'm not fond of - others may like it. Beans were also "fair." I think that they may need to rethink some of the sides as I've eaten quite a bit of BBQ in all of the major regions at both the famous places and not so famous.

I'll definitely be back for the meats and will try the ribs next time. If they delivered to my neighborhood (I'm just outside their range), I'd probably pack on the pounds because it's definitely worth eating their food again. Cheap, good "eats" is always welcome with me!
