“Holiday House tour”
Review of Woodford Mansion

Woodford Mansion
Reviewed 7 December 2013

Although this mansion is open throughout the year, I would suggest trying to visit during the holiday house tour which is generally held Thursday - Sunday, the first two weeks in December. There are six Fairmount Park mansions decorated by volunteer garden clubs, who do a beautiful job. Inside the house are informative guides who provide interesting history about the house and how it has come to its current state of preservation. The entrance fee is $5 per person.

With only one other review for Woodford Mansion, we didn't really know what to expect... but we were thrilled with what we found! We were the only ones there (on my Birthday) and the guide made it a very personal experience, showing us "behind the scenes" areas not usually part of the tour and focusing on areas of the homes history that we were most interested in instead of offering a generic speech. If you only see one historic home in Fairmount Park, I'd highly recommend this one.

I recently visited Woodford Mansion, one of the historic summer "country houses" that were built by Colonial Philadelphians. While it just looks like one of the many historic houses in and around Philly, it is surprising on the inside. The house has a fascinating history and every room is filled with period antiques. It is architecturally quite unique with a number of details I had never seen before. Our tour guide was friendly and had so much to tell us about the house, its historical owners and the antiques. It's located in the Park about 15 minutes from downtown, so you need to take a car or taxi.
