Owner description: The Barnes Foundation houses one of the finest collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French painting in the world. An extraordinary number of masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse provide a depth of work by these artists that is unavailable elsewhere. Established as an educational institution, the Barnes carries out its mission teaching classes in its galleries and Arboretum.

I just drove across the state of Pa. to visit the new Barnes Foundation and the trip was well worth the 6 hour drive. I am not aware of another art museum to display a large art collection in this manner. The room arrangements by Dr. Barnes put Renoir, Picasso, Cezanne and host of others next to each other and the effect is stunning. If planning a visit, buy online reservations ahead of time or risk not being able to enter. Allow at least 2 hours to fully take in the collection.

I don't think I've ever seen so many Cezannes in one place. Not to mention the other artists of the period. Viewing the art can be difficult when crowds form in the small rooms. But they soon disperse.

If you enjoy Renoir, Piccaso, Matisse - this is a must see museum as these works of art can never go on tour. Where else can you see a collection of 181 Renoir paintings? The museum recently moved to Ben Franklin Parkway from the burbs. There are many small rooms so entry is a timed ticket - be sure to order tickets before you go as they are sold out several days to weeks in advance. Allow several hours to enjoy :>)
