“Excellent Stay for Both Kids and Dog!”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We recently stayed with two kids and our black lab. It was our first time traveling with a dog, and the hotel made it so convenient even delivering dog bowls and bed to the room. The hotel staff was fabulous, especially Ben the doorman that made us feel welcome the minute we drove up outside the hotel. And the staff inside gave great suggestions for where to eat that was close by with good food reasonably priced, and family friendly. Just wish we could have stayed longer!

Room Tip: We loved looking out over the park.

Thanks for bringing the whole family along. We know it's hard to leave your four-legged kids behind so we try and make sure they're having as much fun as you are. Hope to see the five of you again soon.

Happy travels -

I booked hotel Monaco as a last resort after searching for a room at the last minute. My husband and I are moving to Philly and after finding out the corporate apartment we were renting wouldn't we ready for another week, I was in a panic looking for a place to stay for myself, husband, and 4mth old baby. The rooms are a bit small but very comfortable and cozy, The decor is great. The staff is top notch and very friendly. Wonderful location. Restaurant downstairs(room service)... Great! Can say enough about this place. The housekeeper even left a note and two tiny stuffed animals for the baby. I will recommend this place over and over.

Welcome to Philly! Hopefully all of your friends and relatives will stay with us when they're visiting you (aka coming to town for a cheesesteak). Our room attendants take great personal care of the guests staying in "their" rooms, practically as if you are staying in their own house.

Cheers -

Our visit didn't start well - it was pouring rain and there was no one to greet our cab to help us get our bags into the hotel - and the front desk confused us with another reservation at check-in. Decor can only be described as garish. Impossible to sleep in a room with such overstimulating wallpaper (giant pictures of cherubs, etc., on some walls, and large geometric patterns on other walls in the same room), carpet (giant florals), and furniture (red lacquer chest with spiked trim on top) - you get the picture. If you have to go to the restroom in the middle of the night, be prepared to be overstimulated by the giant patterns in the wallpaper and plan to read a book for a few hours to try to get back to sleep. Our visit didn't end well - the front desk tried to charge us $100 more than the rate we reserved on the web. We couldn't prove the rate because the two e-mails sent to us by the hotel to confirm our reservation didn't have the rate listed on them, and the person who checked us in didn't confirm our rate either, so it was our word against the hotel's word. We dug in and they reduced the rate, but this shouldn't happen at a hotel that has this kind of rating on Tripadvisor. When we checked out the person at the front desk asked if we needed a cab, but then didn't bother to call one. One of the worst hotel experiences we have ever had.

I agree, your stay's start was far from ideal, and even further from our expectations for how to welcome you to the Monaco. Unfortunately it sounds as if it ended as smoothly as it started, which is to say pretty rough. I will investigate your reservation's history to determine where a discrepancy may have occurred, but I can assure you there are no manual rate changes taking place. It sounds as if our guest service agent did the right thing in adjusting the rate in question for you.

As far as the decor goes, we can certainly agree that it is not to everyone's taste. Clearly, I am disappointed that it had such a dramatic effect on your ability to relax and sleep peacefully, because at the end of the day, that is the core of our business: sleep. Please reach out to me directly if you would like to give us another opportunity. I cannot promise different decor, but I can promise a better experience.

Highest Regards,

Mark

We picked this hotel mostly for the location, directly across the street from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. We paid a bit extra for a corner room with a tub that had incredible views of the Hall and Bell, well worth it. I looked forward to enjoying the views, but the real value was being able to see all the nearby sites and quickly return and collapse exhausted into our very comfortable bed. They are also right around the corner from the starting point for many of the tour bus operations and a large gift shopping mall and food court. We bought an all-day hop-on hop-off pass, and the operator gave us 1.5 days for the price of 1.

The hotel is very attractive, with a large, comfortable lobby great for just hanging out in and reading the paper. In the evening they pour a generous free wine tasting. The lighting and the use of mirrors, including in the elevators were outstanding.

My daughter definitely enjoyed the tub and I appreciated the large shower. I understand many rooms only have a smaller shower, so you may want to consider upgrading if you like a tub. Also, it would be a real shame to stay here and not pay for a view room.

One charming amenity is the free loan of a pet goldfish. My daughter was very much looking forward to it. Although we asked in advance, it took three calls to get the goldfish delivered, but when it finally came it was a huge hit. I think they probably had to send someone out to buy one for us! The hotel seems to be extremely pet friendly, we saw many dogs coming and going. We're not dog people, but it didn't bother us, and there were no odors in our room, so perhaps they restrict the dogs to certain rooms or floors.

We only had one small disappointment. The hotel's website really promotes their rooftop bar, and it is mentioned nicely in a number of reviews. Unfortunately (and unmentioned) is that it is restricted to adults only, despite being a large space divided into a number of sections. We were very politely but firmly asked to leave, and in the brief time we were there, two other families were also escorted out. It is so nice up there that it would be great if they could figure out some way to accommodate families or at least prominently mention in the promotions that it is adult-only.

The downstairs hotel restaurant seemed very friendly, but it is also pretty expensive in the evenings. The front desk can suggest a number of nearby choices.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Monaco, and look forward to returning!

Room Tip: Pay extra for a view room with a tub. The corner rooms are great!

Thank you for choosing the Monaco and for taking the time to write such a thorough review. To answer a few of your questions: 1. Sometimes the fish are just stubborn and won't come out of their castle or pirate ship. 2. Some rooms do have only a shower stall 3. We have soaking tubs in our spa rooms and some rooms also feature the traditional shower/tub combo 4. As you noted most people love dogs, just not living with them, so we have pet free floors to help avoid that.

Hope that helps!

See you soon -

Even after reading the reviews, and seeing photos it was a better experience in person. I had an exceptional stay, loved the quirkiness of the hotels styling. They had great customer service and I actually took them up on some advise about places to eat. The location can not be beat, my room looked out right on the Independence mall, WOW.

Room Tip: Don't be on the top floor if you're a light sleeper, you can hear the rooftop bar sometimes.

Green Features: I thought it was excellent that they practice such great 'Green' practices. Loved the recycling, even in the guest rooms.

The Hotel Monaco was lovely, in a great location with a good restaurant next door. The staff was very helpful and accomodating.Highly recommend it for business or pleasure. It's proximity to Independence Hall in the Old City makes it wonderful for tourists.

Thank you for staying with the Monaco on your recent business trip to the City of Brotherly Love. I'm sure history would be a lot cooler for all of us if we knew that it was so accessible to nightly wine and comfortable beds.

We were expecting a fancy, well decorated hotel. That we found but cozy, family friend it is definitly not. No refills at the minibar nor for amenities. Concierge does not know the town. You waIt for more than 30 minutes for your car if you park it with them. After two days not refilling the minibar they charge you four dollars to bring a three dollar bottle of water, it is a sjame, not for the money but for the respect they should have to a guest and lost it. They are away behind from what we read about them.
