“Eat eat eat - repeat”
Reviewed 15 October 2012

This restaurant is wonderful. My husband and I go there repeatedly. We take friends who go back and take other friends. Yum-ME! Try the shredded pork and turnip soup - a bit spicy but delicious. All the dishes are wonderful. Prawns are large and super fresh. Beautiful fresh fish and vegies - we really like the green beans in hot pepper sauce. Hot pots are great and some of the very best lemon chicken.
Arrive early and be prepared to wait. it's worth it!

Visiting from CT. Had dinner here. Triple Delight had a great garlic sauce. Can also recommend Hong Kong Won Ton Soup!

“Great food, great prices.”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

I don't always listen to guidebook ratings, but in this case I'm very glad I did. Our AAA guidebook had good things to say about Shiao Lan Kung, and it was right. In the heart of Philly's Chinatown, the outside is unassuming, and the interior is fairly plain, but that's not why we were there. We were there for excellent Chinese food at great prices, and we were not disappointed.
We started with steamed vegetable dumplings and egg drop soup--very flavorful and generous helpings, followed by Happy Family, Four Seasons, and House Beef--again, all generous portions, but so good that there was hardly any left to box up.
Service was attentive and friendly, with a very steady flow of diners. It was only 6 PM but the tables were refilled as quickly as they were vacated. Prices were very reasonable (I didn't see any item above $18, and most entrees were around $10).
The funny thing--we didn't notice the entire windowful of awards the restaurant has won over the years (posted in its front window) until after we left. But we were not surprised. So if you're looking for good, reasonably priced Chinese, look no further than Shiao Lan Kung.

“Definitely the best Chinese restaurant in Philly!”
Reviewed 20 December 2011

Love the food here...I know that ownership has changed over the last couple of years, but I still feel like they cook some great food. We love the fried pan noodles, the eggplant beef hotpot, fried dumplings, shrimp and green beans, and always another generic dish like beef and broccoli. As you can see, we aren't the most adventurous, but in reality, it's just as important that the easy foods like this are so tasty! If you're more adventurous, I think you'll like their other dishes as well. The best part - everything is reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. It definitely gets crowded on the weekends - if you don't want to wait, I would suggest going either early in the evening, like 5pm, or late, like 10pm. The wait is worth it though!

“Fried Wonton Soup on a cold snowy night”
Reviewed 19 December 2009

This place has great food! I ordered the fried wonton soup and orange chicken which were both tasty and delish! Others at the table had szechuan beef and fried dumplings, chicken with mixed vegetables etc. all of which was great. The tea was a bit on the weak side but always hot. Given the fact that our party trekked through over a foot of snow to eat, it was well worth it!
