“Skyspace at Chestnut Hill Meeting”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

I have visited the still-new Chestnut Hill Meeting, many years in the planning by the Quaker group that gathers there on Mermaid Lane each week, and was very impressed with both the building and the amazing "light show" produced several times a week by a combination of interior ceiling lighting and the space in the ceiling center that opens to the heavens. I say "heavens" because it seems to open further than to the air or to the sky: it seems to reach somewhere ethereal and magical, and the show holds us in its silence in this special place for long enough for a kind of shared peace to emerge that is hard to describe and impossible to quantify. The color contrasts that fool the eye without high-tech gadgets or video are soothing and transforming, and I highly recommend a visit to experience this.

“Surprising experience”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Contemplation in the meeting room of the Chestnut Hill Meetinghouse during an opening of Skyspace is a very unusual experience and difficult to describe. It allows one to experience the silence of a meeting for worship for an hour, and be inspired by the artist's framing of the sky with brilliant colors. The colors are influenced by the amount of light in the sky. Go see!

“Don't miss this incredibly simple and incredibly spiritual installation in a Quaker meeting house in the Quaker City.”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

One of the spiritual highlights of my, so far, 63 year lifetime! I was so proud to be a native Philadelphian, a Quaker and an artist when I experienced Skyspace on a return visit to my hometown.

“A place to contemplate light and life”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Peaceful yet stirring. I went to the Guggenheim's 2013 James Turrell exhibit and far preferred this Skyspace for its intimacy. From Mr. Turrell's 2013 National Medal of Arts citation: "James Turrell for his groundbreaking visual art. Capturing the powers of light and space, Mr. Turrell builds experiences that force us to question reality, challenging our perceptions not only of art, but also of the world around us."

“Rectangles of Color”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Well worth a visit. Be prepared for stunning colors, not necessarily "natural" colors. You'll see violets and turquoises and pale blues and sea-greens, and you will have trouble believing that those patches of saturated color are images of the sky, and then, a bird will fly by, fly over and through the deep sea green rectangle. Wow!
