“Best Bed and Breakfast in Philadelphia”
Reviewed 9 May 2011

The Spruce Hill Manor is the perfect choice. The innkeeper, Janet, seems geniunely interested in the happiness and comfort of her guests and is very helpful and knowledgable of the surrounding area. The rooms are spotless, very large, and full of victorian glamour. I stayed there for 2 nights: one with my wedding party and the next for our honeymoon night. The picture opportunities alone were well worth the stay - the place is just incredible. There is even a beautifully kept back yard, tons of flowering bushes and sights to see. If you are getting married, traveling alone, or vacationing with family or friends and want to stay somewhere incredible, this is definitely the place for you. We can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Every room is perfect! Select any with confidence.

Having never stayed at a B&B I was not quite sure what to expect but immediately upon arrival I was made to feel extremely welcomed. Janet is an extraordinary hostess, willing to "customize" your visit in anyway possible to ensure your complete satisfaction. My sisters and I had a wonderful time and Janet went out of her way to make our Sisters' summit perfect from beginning to end!

My husband and I recently visited my son in Philadelphia. We stayed at Spruce HIll Manor for three days. Janet, the Innkeeper, was very hospitable, making sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We highly recommend this B&B to other travelers.

Traveled to Philly to visit family and found this place via web search. Turned out that, not only was it convenient, but it was a wonderful place. Janet was warm, friendly, personable and made you feel very welcome. She was helpful too! Will definitely return here again.

Janet is a wonderful host. She is gracious and hospitable in every way. She helped make our first time visit to Philadelphia as complete as our time allowed. Her suggestions for restaurants and activities were perfect for our family! She provided a variety of healthy, organic, tasty breakfast options as well as drinks and snacks throughout the day. The room was as clean as I've seen and the sleeping was great. We will stay here again!

There is no doubt that Janet knows about Innkeeping. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you are in excellent hands. Spruce Hill Manor in University City in Philadelphia is a charming and beautiful bed and breakfast manor. Janet makes sure that your stay is truly memorable. The rooms are delightful - we have stayed in different rooms every time. Breakfast is delicious and we will go back again and again. Thank you Janet

When the nearest Red Roof Inn or Motel 6 most likely has more comfortable bedding than Philadelphia’s so-called “premier bed and breakfast,” you know you have a problem. When the number one-ranked full-service hotel (as of May 2010) for Philadelphia on Trip Advisor is offering rooms at a better rate than Trip Advisor’s seventh best Philadelphia bed and breakfast, you know you have a problem.
Spruce Hill Manor has a compelling Web site with 13 “reviews” from former guests singing its praises. Unfortunately, the reality of this lodging belies its advertising. Rooms are indeed charming and full of interesting knick knacks, but the—to be extremely generous in diction—“oriental-style” rugs are tired and cheap looking. Bedding arrangements are as advertised, but the beds themselves feature hard, uncomfortable mattresses—not to mention mediocre pillows—evoking a college dormitory more than a fine inn. Indeed, my behind felt raw and sore after a night in one of the Inn's beds.
Further, the location is far from a net positive. Somewhat close to Drexel and Penn, but on the cusp of one of Philadelphia’s most depressed West Philadelphia neighborhoods, it would be unwise to walk the Boss’ “streets of Philadelphia” surrounding the Spruce Hill after dark.
Janet, the Spruce Hill’s innkeeper, is amiable and helpful enough, but one’s opinion of her is tarnished when one considers the pricey rates she charges for lackluster accommodations in a depressed part of the city. How she can justify charging $25 additional dollars per night when over two people occupy “suites” designed for three or four people is beyond my comprehension. Why not just raise the base rate of the suite and be honest? Am I at a bed and breakfast or flying fee-happy Spirit Airlines? This surcharge is especially troubling when one considers that the “extra” guest(s) is only partaking of a cold continental breakfast that has less variety than that available at a Holiday Inn Express. She describes it as "organic," but the orange juice is straight from a generic carton, and the pastries are suspiciously similar to frozen puff pastries available in any Wal-Mart grocery store. Are eggs and breakfast meat too much to expect when staying at—to quote the Spruce Hill’s site once again--Philadelphia’s “premier bed and breakfast”? Hardly.
The Spruce Hill Manor does not meet basic standards of comfort and quality for a bed and breakfast charging as much as it does, and should be avoided until the deficiencies discussed above are fully addressed. A “bed and breakfast” with neither comfortable beds nor delicious breakfast? Something’s wrong.
