The food here is amazing, the restaurant is clean and warm, and the owner is extraordinarily friendly. Having moved, I miss this place tremendously.

“Great food, nice times.”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

This is one of my favorite places and worth a trip for anyone visiting Philadelphia. It's an easy walk from the Penn area or from center city/ Rittenhouse Square. The food is traditional Balkan food- bean soups, smoked meats, stuffed cabbage, grilled meats, etc. It is perhaps not best for vegitarians, but is great for anyone else. The service is very friendly and relaxed. In addition to good food, you might make a friend. The prices are not high and it's well worth a visit. Note that hours are limited in the summer. Radivan and Wendy, the owners, are wonderful. It's BYOB, and it's easy to pick up wine or beer near by. Well worth a visit.

“Off the beaten path, super friendly BYO”
Reviewed 29 April 2012

Was not sure what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, the house smoke meats were insanely good. The owners were incredibly friendly and the prices were extremely reasonable. I want more people in Philadelphia to know about this little gem tucked behind south street!

“A Different Cuisine”
Reviewed 9 April 2011

We wound up at Balkan Express last weekend when another place we planned to visit for dinner was full. Certainly, it was an interesting cultural experience, but we were not all that thrilled with our dinners, particularly the entrees.

The smoked dill appetizer with the vegetables was very tasty. My husband's spicy fish chowder had a nice after-kick of spice and was filled with a goodly amount of nice fish pieces. My daughter's Cevapcici, skinless homemade sausages on bed of minced onions, were rather tough, but the onions were delicious. My beet salad was to come with a horseradish sauce, but there was none. The best salad was the cucumber and dill salad.

I ordered the RAZNJICI, which was supposed to be grilled tender pork cubes, on skewers, served with vegetables. Instead of the vegetables I wanted and expected, the plate had basically sauerkraut salad and some fairly greasy potatoes. The pork cubes were extremely tough. My husband's vegetable dish was completely underwhelming. My daughter thought she was getting a "normal burger" from the description: PLJESKAVICA Serbian burger made of ground beef and minced onions served with a roll and a salad. Again, no salad, and the burger was really just a huge version of the beef sausage that she had as an appetizer. It was so dense that she found it difficult to eat.

A group of 7 came in right after us. It is definitely a mom and pop restaurant. The woman needed us to get our order in before the other group's order. The woman served us our appetizers/salads and told us that our entrees were also ready. Needless to say, when we received them, they were not hot. It was clear that handling orders for a table of four at the same time as a table of 7 was a problem for the kitchen.

A family birthday party was concluding as we came in, and it seemed like a nice celebration. We are sure that there are those, like the couple exiting as we entered, who think Balkan Express is fabulous dining, but we thought it was just ok.
