“Convenient and quiet”

We were pleased with this hotel on a long weekend to Philadelphia. The location was not in the center of things but within walking distance of historic area, many restaurants and the waterfront.
The room was a little worn looking, juice stain on carpet, but considering how many families appeared to be staying that wasn't shocking. The Taste restaurant on site was very good. City Parking was a block away.

Good luck trying to contact the staff about any issues. It didn't seem like they cared at all. I don't know if they respond to phone calls or notes. They might work from around 10am to around 3pm on weekdays. They might not. It's a mystery.

They will not provide any, and I mean any, maid services unless specifically requested. And then it's only a maybe. If you want clean towels and sheets, and the trash emptied, at least every couple of days, try another hotel.

The bedroom has an AC unit in the window. But the bathroom and living room are very hot and humid.

The bathroom has cracked tile.

Internet access may or may not work. The TV may or may not work.

Even though it is cheaper than most alternatives, I would advise spending more money elsewhere.

The hotel only had someone available to check in between 3 & 5pm & you could only check out between 11am & 12 noon, otherwise there was no-one available nor was there any contact number if there was a problem. Our main problem was a toilet that would not flush in a bathroom with no air-conditioning in temperatures of over 80 degrees. This made for a very unpleasant night - I did not dare try the shower. The TV did not work, there was no plug in the sink, the lighting was so poor that it was not possible to read. The bedroom was very small but air-conditioned which helped. The bathroom was sandwiched between the bedroom & a living room, but the living room could not be used as you could not open the window and the air conditioning was only in the bedroom. It needed decorating and there was old furniture piled up in the hallway, no lift and very steep stairs. However it was in an excellent location and the room was clean.

All the other reviews are right on and I just want to add that its a walkable city and you are smack in the middle of everything. Aura even got us bucket of ice from the tavern below when we chked in. Room: very simple, bed, AC, shower, small TV. Most of the time we were out and about - used the place to sleep and that was pretty good. The price is right. Casino, Reading terminal, and fab restaurants all a stroll away. Check out Penns Landing and the visitor center just 4 blocks. Compared to NYC. its a quiet town but w/ all amenities of a big city- do it all and go back to the hotel to sleep. Old house, in an old area, full of history. paying low rates. How bad is that?

This is not the place to go if you want anything more than a reasonably priced place to sleep. It was very clean and updated (room decor was modern and walls appeared to have been painted in the last few years) but it had no frills. I was surprised that there were two packets of shampoo and two bars of facial soap in the bathroom, and the towels were softer than the ones you find at more middle of the road places. The air conditioner was a window unit that hadn't been hooked up yet as it was just starting to be warm in Philly, but it was in the closet, so we were able to use the fan. One of the two windows was easily opened (well...removed since there wasn't a catch mechanism to keep it open). The location can't be beat, and at about half the price of any other place in the city, it was a bargain. It wasn't easy to find somewhere to get breakfast nearby, so we ended up getting stuff from a food cart, which we forgot that we loved to do having been out of the city for a while. It was an all around great stay. The shower could use a place to put your shower items other than on the floor, and it was a stall shower. Also, we had to check in at the Monkey Bar downstairs, but that went smoothly, it was no problem. They seem to have good customer service too as I'd requested a microfridge if one was available, and someone called and left me a message saying they didn't have those but that there was plenty of time to cancel if I needed to. I was impressed. I will definitely stay here again the next time I'm in the city. If you are high maintenance though, stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: No elevator that I saw so you may want to ask for the second floor if you don't like stairs.

Hotel location is great and rooms are clean. The steps from street to rooms are very steep, hallways and rooms narrow. Good hot water temp and pressure. Older toilet plumbing that might give you problems.
Location is excellent. The pub across the street has a whole wall of microbrews and half of them are only $3 a pint from 5-7pm, everyday. Market St. and all its bars and restaurants are just around the corner and the famed Tavern Grill is also a short walk. Main tourist sites are all an easy stroll, and even South St. is only a quick cab/bus ride away if you don't want to make a longer walk.
The thing that takes SHH down a notch for me is its shady factor. It was difficult to find a contact email/phone = they varied from various web sites, were incorrect, or just not posted. One site said the hotel was closed? Check-in is only a short window in the PM via grabbing keys and signing slip at the bar. I'm not quite sure what's going on with the bar... an aging banner outside announced it was newly opened, but it was closed several of the nights we were there (?) and hours weren't clearly marked. The security alarm downstairs went off for the better part of a day... no one was around to turn it off? There was a huge pile of furniture randomly shoved into in the hallway in front of us. The sitting room and bathroom were pleasant: simple and clean, but the bedroom had all its pictures removed (hooks still in the wall and faded paint from where pics were) and desperately needs a new coat of paint.
Hopefully it's just in a quick period of transition for SHH. With a little sprucing up, this could be a premiere guesthouse. We'd stay again.

Room Tip: Request a room off the street or else you'll probably hear traffic.

This was my second time staying at this hotel. The first time was two years ago and I was less then pleased but I heard it was under new ownership and the location was so appealing.
Let's be clear, it's not a luxury hotel but neither is the price. I have paid triple the amount for a dump in New York city. My last stay at the hotel was great and I'm glad I gave it another chance. Nothing fancy, the rooms are small but more then adequate, extremely clean and in a great location, for a great price. If your looking for a place in the city to stay without breaking the bank this is the place for you.
