The building is very well done- can not believe the county did such a great job with the site- Service was very good tho the server seemed to be new. The menue is very limited- seems to be only Appetizers, Salads and Sandwiches - no main dishes- We had one App- we shared that was $14 and Sandwiches. Not much seafood on the menue- The Cod was done in very heavy batter and the crabcake was just ok. I Do not agree that the food is great nor generous- Not a great selection, quality or value. ALSO WE FOUND THE PLACE TO BE VERY NOISY- tho there were many empty tables- We had to speak loudly to have a conversation. perhaps this is a design flaw. This is a large place- I hope they do well since there are 3 large empty resturants for rent on the road within a half mile or less from the Boathouse.

The Boathouse is a new waterfront restaurant in West Orange. Tables are very difficult to get for dinner. It’s always crowded and we had wanted to try it for a while. We went for lunch just because it was so hard to get dinner reservations. I’m not sure whether it’s so crowded because it’s a new place or because everyone thinks it’s great. I thought it was very good, but not worth the hassle to get a table.

Atmosphere is excellent. Big gas fireplaces throughout and nicely decorated. Architecturally, I think there are some design flaws. The restaurant is on the water, but many of the tables have obstructed views. The windows should be bigger, at least in the room we were in. Also, unless I missed a second set of restrooms, what they have (one toilet and one urinal in the men’s room) is completely inadequate for a restaurant of this size. They have a lot of outdoor tables, and I will be curious to see how this plays out in the summer (my guess is great views but even more overcrowding).

Food was very good. Large portions and big seafood selection. Fairly reasonable food prices. Drinks, however, are overpriced: $12-14 for their “specialty drinks,” no glass of wine cheaper than $8, no bottles for less than $30, and most are much more. I guess they can charge a big markup for the view.

Service was friendly but very slow—and this was at lunch when it wasn’t very crowded. I can only imagine how slow things must be at a busy dinner service. While the server was not very attentive during our meal, once we were finished, we were kind of rushed out—they tried to clear our drink glasses before we were finished, and the server brought our check without even asking about coffee or dessert.

All in all, we would definitely go back—if we could get a table without jumping through hoops. It’s a good place, but at this point I think it might be a little over-hyped.

I recommend the ribs and the fish appetizers. Portions are huge -- have dinner tonite and take home the rest for lunch tommorow. Service is friendly. The staff seems to like working there and it rubs off on the place to create a welcoming atmosphere. I look forward to going back in the spring, sitting outside and enjoying the lake view.

This restaurant is located a few minutes from St. Barnabas Med. Ctr. We had been at the hospital all day while my husband was having surgery and needed a break, so we got there just before 4:00 (and chose from the luncheon menu). My son had passed by the Boathouse on his way to the hospital (we don't live in the Central Jersey area) and thought it looked nice, so we went. What a delight! The restaurant is decorated beautifully with all the wood, fireplaces, outdoor fire pits, etc., and it is right on a reservoir with wonderful water views. The staff is friendly and personable. We had a wonderful waiter, Charles, who was just perfect. He made wonderful suggestions (and not the most expensive on the menu) for both the food and wine. He was very attentive, without being overly eager or overbearing. He was very professional and it made for a nice meal. Our food was very good. We had the she-crab soup (Charles recommended). We also had crab cakes, probably some of the best. I know, every restaurant claims theirs are, but these were excellent - with lots of crab and hardly any filler. The atmosphere was wonderful and offered a wonderful respite for 1-2 hours. I wish we lived a little closer, so we could make this one of our favorites. But, we will be back. Wonderful!
