“Engagement Party at McLoone's”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

We just hosted a brunch and McLoone's and it was lovely. The service was fantastic, the selection of food was huge and everything was delicious. There also was live music. They set up the room for us according to my specs and even place the balloons an the centerpieces fro us. Didn't let us lift a finger to help. The guests had a wonderful experience, as they told me when they left. The banquet coordinator and her assistant were very helpful and both were there through the whole event. Oh and the setting was beautiful. The place, having large windows, sits on the banks of the reservoir, and the doors open to lovely terraces where you can sit or stroll to catch the view or just get a breath of fresh air.
The whole party was a huge success and I would highly recommend McLoone's. BF

The resturant itself is nice but the food and cost for what you get is not worth it. I've eaten here 3 times Lunch, Brunch and Dinner and all three times were horrible. If I can give it a minus rating I would.

Lunch was probably the best of all three times. I went with 5 people total cost was $35 per person (w/tip) for burgers and light sandwiches, non acholoic drinks

Sunday brunch was second. menu was strange, not basic traditional brunch menus, odd choices, no pastas, nothing for the kids other than bagels. they did have a small egg station and the raw bar was ok but not replensihed all that quickly. We had a party of 14 bill was over $800

Dinner was recent. Got seated quickly for a Saturday night, and the service was good. Party of 4- 2 people had chicken pasta dishes, neither ate the chicken saying it was rubbery, and 2 has the swordfish (tuna was sold out by 7:30???) very salty and flakey. bill with one round of drinks no dessert, coffee, $210 including tip.

The place is nice overlooking lake. The bar has entertainment on weekend, and there is a patio and outside seating in the summer but when they open the windows at night, you get the lovely smells from Turtle Back Zoo which is right across the lake.

Avoid it, it is not even worth the try to see what it is like.

“Essex County Politico Hangout”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

McLoone's occupies a nice spot on the reservoir. The fireplaces provide a sense of warm welcome, as does the rustic architecture and décor, which reminds me of a national park hotel lobby.

We have been there three times, once when it first opened, once for a drink, and once recently for lunch. I have to say that the food is just average, and many of the selections on the menu are kind of pedestrian with sugary sauces.

Each time we have been there the service has left something to be desired. The first time I blamed it on the fact that the place was so new. We had reservations for a birthday, but despite the reservations, there was chaos at check-in. OK, they just opened a month or so before we visited. The waiter was nice, but the service was uneven. The meals were average, but nothing more. The second time we visited during the summer, maybe a year later. We just had a drink on the outdoor deck. Again, the service was poor--inattentive. When we finished our wine, no one checked to see if we wanted anything else. Serving equipment was stacked haphazardly around the deck, and things just looked disorderly. The third time we went was recently. It was a convenient place to meet friends who were up from south Jersey for a day. We had lunch there. Again, it was OK but not much else. Service once again was nice enough but uneven, with confusion about orders and the bill.

The ceilings are high and some of the rooms are cavernous, and so it tends to get really noisy, and quiet conversations can be difficult. The bar is perhaps the nicest feature of the place, but again, it gets really noisy.

I think the restaurant serves as the hangout for Essex County politicos, since elected county officials had a big hand in developing the restaurant and the whole South Mountain recreation complex. Now that Pal's Cabin has been demolished, McLoone's serves as the new meeting place.

McCloone's isn't terrible. It just is mediocre; and in a region like Essex County, there are plenty of better options for memorable food, pleasant atmosphere, and capable service.

We were a party of 11 on a Sunday afternoon. Our reserved table was ready, but placed next to several other large party tables, which made the room too loud -- had to shout and couldn't hear anyway. We had the lunch menu. The prices are too high for this type of restaurant -- more like NYC prices. $12 for a very small Mojito. $17 for a spinach salad with 6 tiny pieces of ahi tuna on it. The service was spotty. Two of us did not get our lunch until long after the others, and it was clear that one of those lunches had been totally forgotten. The food itself got mixed reviews in our group. I would not go back.

“Nice appearance”
Reviewed 27 February 2014 via mobile

We had 4 appetizers. Thai wings, shrimp pizza, pot pie puffs, and mussels. Wings and pizza were very good and different. Interior and exterior were very nice.
