“Nice place BUT.......”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

Many mixed feelings about this place, because our stay was a combination of really nice and really annoying. When we checked in, a very disinterested and sleepy front desk person checked us in, gave us no info, and seemed annoyed that we were even there. When we got to our room, it was literally swarming with flies. We unpacked and tried to kill the flies, which seemed like an impossible task. When we tried to call the front desk, the call just went to answering machine mode. We then drove down to the office.

Another front desk person was there, Jasmyn, who was delightful, helpful, and couldn't do enough to rectify the situation. She gave us an upgrade for a nominal fee and went down to our lodge to move us herself. She was absolutely wonderful.. This lodge was a Presidential lodge and actually had a wonderful view of the beautiful Gettysburg country side. Note: when you make a reservation, make sure you get a view of the countryside, and not just of other cabins, which many of them have.

So here are the pluses and minuses:

Pluses: A wonderful and quiet, scenic setting. Location is great, about 10-15 min outside of Gettysburg, an easy ride. Stocked kitchen, Keurig brewer (but not in all the lodges).

Minuses: BUGGY!! We still had some (though less) flies in our upgraded suite. Flies buzzed in our ears and woke us early each morning. Also I saw a dead bug under the sink in the bathroom. The last morning we were there, I found a HUGE centipede in the kitchen. Exterminator, anyone?

You can NEVER get in touch with the front desk. They are ALWAYS on answering machine mode, not a good thing. A second time I tried to get in touch with them and I had to drive down again. The person at the front desk couldn't have been more helpful, but they should be answering their phones.

After we left, we were about an hour away and realized that my husband had left something in the room.. Again we called the hotel, to no avail. I then called the emergency maintenance number given on the outgoing message. I gave my number to the maintenance person, who said someone at the front desk would call. That was yesterday, and NO CALL. So today I called again, and left a message with the General Manager, and explained about the item left and requested a call back. NO call back. Customer service, anyone?

No screens on the windows. Therefore, we were forced to keep the air conditioner on although the weather was gorgeous.

So, although we really did have a nice time, experienced some excellent customer service, and enjoyed the scenery, I really cannot say I would stay here again due to some serious problems in the way this facility is run. Some basic customer service and maintenance would go a long way here.

Room Tip: If you want a room with good scenery, ASK. We were in Massachusetts (name of the room) and it was p...

Thank you for taking the time to review our property and we appreciate your feedback. We apologize that your check-in/front desk experience was not as you had hoped. We strive to make every guest feel welcome at all times during their stay and we are saddened to hear this was not the case. We are pleased to hear however, that the front desk was able to help make your stay more comfortable in the end. We do hope you will consider staying with us again.

Rustic but spacious cabins with large, comfortable beds and scenic views--That, coupled with a friendly and accomodating staff, makes for a good recommendation. There is a dinette with microwave and coffee makers, table and dishware-- and the bathrooms are very well designed using natural rock tiles. The continental breakfast was fine, a bit better than some motel chains provide. I believe we got this for about $100 with a Living Social coupon.

Room Tip: We used the Captain's quarters for our $100 (coupon) price

We had two lodges a Captains and a Luietants lodge. The lodges were spacious and the staff was friendly and helpful. I think they over hype the view though, as most of the lodges do not have great views just views of other lodges. The lodges came with a refrigerator and microwave but nothing to cook on. I can understand if they do not want people to cook in the lodges, but it would be nice to offer a couple of grills for larger family groups especially since they do not have dinner restaraunt on site. They show pictures of upper end food on their webpage which lent me to believe there was a restaraunt on site. They do have a restaraunt for breakfast only. We did eat at a couple of their suggested restaraunt and I recomment the Farnsworth House. Sounds like I was not satisfied with our stay. Not So. Again I cannot express how accommodating the desk clerks were and how nice the rooms were. I would go back and I would recommend The Lodge of Gettysburg to others.

Thank you for choosing The Lodges at Gettysburg as your vacation spot! We are pleased to hear you were impressed with our staff, we will pass along the kind words! We do host a lot of wedding and large group events here, which is why you might have been confused about the restaurant situation. Those groups get their events catered, and yes the food is awesome should you ever find yourself in a situation where you would want to host an event here at The Lodges! Hope to see you again soon.

This former church camp is a collection of lodges on a hill about 10 minutes west of Gettysburg. Our 2 room "Lieutenant" Lodge was clean and nicely appointed with creaky hardwood floors and a nice kitchenette. Since the attached "Corporals Quarters" were unoccupied, it was very, very quiet.

There was a wedding held that evening with the ceremony next to the pond and the reception held in the main building. If you want ceremony and reception in one place, this is a nice option.

From the main building's porch, you can see the monuments on Little Round top if the visibility is right.

The check in check out experience was fine and the room was very clean. The buildings are located on the side of a hill, so exploring the grounds could be challenging to people who have difficulty getting around.

This is a nice, quiet and out of the way spot. My only complaints-- the lighting was not quite right in our lodge and there was no furniture on our deck.

The LAG was charming, quiet, and clean. The cabins had very comfortable beds and beautiful bathrooms. The staff was extremely hospitable and attentive to us and their own duties. Our two day event took place recently and every detail was thoughtful and considerate. The caterer created tasty meals with healthy portions. The conference room and meeting rooms were well appointed. Despite the lovely atmosphere there were a few technological issues but the staff was appreciative for the constructive feedback and willing to address those concerns for the future. We will most definitely be back for our event and possibly separately with our families!

We really enjoyed the grounds and the room was comfortable. We stayed in Corporal Quarters just enough room for 2 people. It was all we needed. However the only issue is you can hear everything your neighbor says and does. I even know the names of the children who stayed next door...very sweet but would of been nice to have a bit more privacy. Upon check in there was no one at the desk and we had to wait 15 minutes. The breakfast they server at $6 each was ok but nothing to write home about. Had to ask for more coffee and waffle batter. The person running the desk was also taking care of breakfast...hence the lack of attention. They really need to have a person tending to the breakfast at all times. The porch overlooking the fields below was beautiful. Great place to have a wedding both for reception and outdoor wedding. Lake was pretty to look at but some nice benches surrounding it would be nice. We walked the grounds but no inviting place to just sit and enjoy the view. It would be nice to have just random benches around the property. Really beautiful place however it could be more that just average. Not sure I would go back..maybe.

We decided to stay at this location when we saw a great deal on living social. The deal was supposed to give us one night at the captains lodge. When we called to reserve our room, they were out of captains lodges so they put us in the lieutenants lodge, one level below what we paid for. We were thankful to still get a room considering it was memorial day weekend. The lodges are in the beautiful countryside of Gettysburg. We tried to check in around 1pm on Sunday. When we walked into the main lobby we were greeted with a quick hello. We told the gentleman at the front desk, "we know we are early, however we wanted to know if our lodge was ready?" He stated that normal check in wasn't until 4pm. I understood this but there has been many of other hotels during my travels that will accommodate. Unfortunately, it wasn't clean yet and the gentleman told us to come back in a couple of hours. Honestly, he didn't seem happy to be working. The good news is, these lodges are conveniently close to all major attractions. We were able to do some shopping at the outlets and visited 2 wineries before returning back to get our keys. It is a short drive into downtown Gettysburg, I'd say about 15 mins maximum. During our second interaction with the staff, my boyfriend picked up the keys and asked the gentleman if there was anything they could give us since we weren't getting the level room we actually paid for. He gave us a coupon for 2 free continental breakfasts which normally cost $5.95 per person. Our lodge was very clean and spacious. When you walk in the door there is living room with a pull out couch and a kitchen. Our view looked right into the woods. Then there is a second room which has 2 queen size beds, TV and very nice bathroom with stand up shower. The bathroom is made out of slate like tiles and feels very "lodge like". Our lodge also had a coffee maker, microwave, plates, cups and a good size fridge. One disappointing thing was we noticed the captains lodges have chairs out front in which you can sit and enjoy the spectacular view. The Lieutenants lodges do not have these. We enjoyed our night in Gettysburg by having dinner at the Dobbin house and then partaking in a paranormal ghost hunt later that night.

The next morning we went down to enjoy our breakfast before heading out to tour the battlefields. Well, there had a been a wedding the evening before so the normal breakfast dining area was closed and they sent us to a room in the back. It is your normal continental breakfast consisting of cereals, muffins, coffee, juices and waffle maker. The room was very uninviting. The back of the room was filled with wedding stuff in piles from the night before and the tablecloths at which we were supposed to sit at were very dirty. There was only a few bagels left. My boyfriend tried to make a waffle and there was no more batter. He had to go to the front desk and ask if it could be refilled. The gentleman said sure and took the batter away. We waited over 10 minutes for him to return, however he never did. I'm not sure how they can charge for this breakfast, as most hotel chains across the country would give this complimentary and also have someone on duty to make sure all food items stay stocked. For the price they normally charge for these lodges I believe that is the least they could do. Upon checkout, my boyfriend tried to ask the associate if this was their normal breakfast and he said he was sorry but wedding the night before had rented the normal breakfast dining area. I would think that they would still care about their other paying guests. Next, the lodges had charged my boyfriends credit card $325. We prepaid our room on living social and all we were contracted to pay was the taxes which should have been $34. He asked the gentleman at the front desk why this charge was made and the associate didn't have a good answer. He said he would get it reversed for him. The upsetting part, is this gentleman didn't even seem sorry. He had a very poor attitude. We didn't catch his name as he wasn't wearing a name badge. We assumed it would be on our check out receipt but wasn't. Please make sure to check your bank accounts after check in to make sure this doesn't happen to you. The main reason I still gave this review a good rating was because the lodges themselves were beautiful, great location, very quiet and very clean. This would be a great location for families as the lodges are very spacious. I would stay here again, however I would bring my own food and try to avoid the staff.
