I will start with... if you are looking to stay in/near downtown gettysburgh and be within walking distance this is not the place for you. It is a 15 min drive. The only thing within walking distance is the restaurant and movie theater which is on the same property and the sheetz out on the main road.
We stayed here in April '14 for a wedding. It is a beautiful hotel and very clean. The ENTIRE hotel was booked that weekend with at least one other wedding worth of guests, a conference and some sort of sorority/fraternity college thing. It was rather quiet for that many people for the most part BUT the night before the wedding the groom, groomsmen, their wives and 2 grooms relatives were hanging out with the groom in his suite (which was HUGE and GORGEOUS). Yes we were drinking but we are all over the age of 30 and sitting around the room just telling stories of the groom to be and laughing having a glass of wine/beer or 2. Well, a hotel employee came to our room to scold us and ask what was going on! We were floored! It was 11 pm and we could hear the commotion in the halls. The college kids were running up and down the halls, sitting in the halls all VERY intoxicated. Why were WE being scolded while chaos was going on out in the halls? Someone should have checked who was booked in that room (which was around a corner at the end of a hall so we were NOT bothering anyone) and realized we were not underage drunk college kids and treated like so. After leaving the groom around midnight we went down to the bar for a nightcap. There were a lot of people still there that looked like they were there for the conference, with beverages, yet we were told they were closed. Were we profiled that we were college kids and they didn't want to serve us? or do they really close that early?!?! We are from NY and are used to bars being open until 4 am but midnight? with a FULL bar you're going to close?! There wasn't anywhere else to go because the restaurant on the property was also closed and nothing in walking distance. Disappointing.
Other than that, the stay was quite pleasant.
We ordered room service for breakfast which took about 30 minutes (but we were told so when we ordered). It is quite expensive but came with everything and anything we needed and had quite large portions. Oh, and it was DELISH! Definitely worth it to splurge once but wouldn't order all my meals through room service.
The décor was beautiful throughout and you really got a sense of patriotism... especially the hallway rugs and the cannon in the lobby.
We stayed in a King room but felt that it was a queen... it was super comfy. We were given lots of coffee and tea (great quality too) and got plenty of refills when they noticed we were using them. The free toiletries were also a great quality. I like to collect them for our camping trips/guest bath and when they noticed we took them they refilled with double!! (We tip housekeeping well since I have worked in the service industry, so that may have helped!) Housekeeping and staff were super polite when running into them in the halls/front desk during the day.
They also have a shuttle to downtown gettysburgh but we were unable to utilize that because it stops running quite early and the rehearsal dinner ended late. They should look into "renting" the shuttle for a fee for such things. Otherwise, if we were there for touring it would have been fabulous!
All in all, a great stay!
