Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 October 2010

My wife and I stayed here for two nights while in Gettysburg. We were very impressed with just about everything - the friendliness of the inn keepers, the building and rooms, and especially the breakfasts. Each morning you get a fruit cup and a homemade pastry, followed by your choice of one of several dishes. The choices weren't your plain boring things either (like pancakes, waffles, etc.). Some examples were raspberry stuffed french toast, breakfast crab kiesh, and sausage/egg/cheese caserole. The food was better than most nice restaurants that we've ever been to. The afternoon cookies were also great!

Our room was the Brafferton Suite which is in the front of the building, near the street. The room was absolutely incredible; our only complaint while there was the level of street noise at night. The street doesn't look like a busy road but it really is. There is constant traffic all night long and many semi trucks also drive by. In fact, the room was louder than rooms I've stayed at in NYC and on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and this gave us some difficulty sleeping. To be fair, on the Brafferton's website it does say that the room has some street noise and to pick a different room if you need absolute quiet - just be sure not to underestimate the level of noise if you pick a room facing the street like we did.

The only other minor complaint is that there wasn't much literature of area attractions in the room or in the lobby. We stayed at the Brickhouse for a night after leaving and in every room they had a comprehensive directory of local dining, shopping, tours, etc. We didn't get any of that at the Brafferton and I feel that we may have missed out on a few things on our first two nights in Gettysburg. Also, there is only on-site parking for two of the rooms (the suites). Otherwise, you need to park at the local parking garage. It is practically next door to the inn, but I'm not sure what limitations you would have if you frequently needed to use your vehicle.

All and all, I would definitely recommend this place to anybody wanting to stay at a B&B. The rooms were wonderful, the staff was friendly, and the food was great. We stayed at the Brickhouse as well and I would rank these at almost a tie, with the Brickhouse getting the slight advantage for the quieter rooms (ours there was on the street but much more quiet), more central location, and the on-site parking.

Thank you for your kind words. We really enjoyed meeting you here at the inn. Just to clarify a few topics:
We have 18 bedrooms in total, 4 of which may be effected by street noise.
The other 14 bedrooms are off the street and extremely quiet. We offer 4 free parking spots for our king suites. Our other rooms use either street parking or a public parking garage located directly behind the inn.
At check in time, we go over a detailed map of the town and a dining and attraction guide is given to all guests detailing everything to do here in Gettsyburg. We also have menus to every restaurant here in Gettsyburg located in our living room for guests to look over.
Thanks Again,
The Hodges Family

We planned a trip to Gettysburg and all the historic sites in Philadelphia. Our stay at the Brafferton was one of the highlights of a great trip. I would recommend them highly. Our stay was great. The food for breakfast was excellent, the type that you go to bread and breasfasts for. The room was clean and comfortable. The Hodges family--our hosts were wonderful. It could not have been a better stay.

For the past 6 summers, my mom and I have stayed at the Brafferton Bed and Breakfast when we vacationed in Gettysburg. We have stayed in 4 different rooms, eaten countless breakfasts, and have never had a less than perfect experience. Each room we have stayed in has had character and charm and has always been spotless. The beds are extremely comfortable and the window ac units keep the temperature perfect. The housekeeping staff does an excellent job every day and is always willing to supply extra towels, soap, etc. As far as the breakfasts go, I cannot say enough good things. Between Joan's pastries and Brian's main course, I never leave without being completely full. Each morning a wide variety of choices are offered and there are always multiple things that sound delicious. Brian, Joan, and Amy-Beth are the most hospitable inn keepers you will ever meet and are always looking to go above and beyond to make your stay the best possible. The Brafferton feels like home and I highly recommend it to all who are planning on traveling to Gettysburg!

This B&B is the best I have ever stayed in, hands down. We felt welcome from the first time we walked in and met Joan and every morning at breakfast with Brian. We will be back to the area and when we do, we will be staying at the Brafferton Inn again! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

We have been coming to the Brafferton Inn for the past 5 years and I would not stay in any other Bed & Breakfast in Gettysburg. The rooms are immaculate and you could not get a better breakfast anywhere. The owners are the best, so friendly and cordial, they cannot do enough for you. We brought another couple with us and they said the same about the B&B. We go there every April & October, so now we are looking forward to going in the Spring. I would love to go back maybe around the Christmas Holidays to get that Olde feeling of the Christmas Season. We have tried different rooms & suites and have enjoyed each one. Thanks for making our stay so Great. Ray & Marie Parker, New Jersey

I have stayed in many bed & breakfasts/inns and the Brafferrton was the worse experience I have ever had at one.
It is run more like a hotel than an inn...and a dumpy one at that.

There is a clock that strikes every hour on the hour loudly during the night.
There is animal type noises overhead
The beds sag and squeak.
The small window type A/C's make a grinding sound every two minutes that is very loud.
There are not two ways out of every room in case of fire...
The only available refreshments throughout the day and in the evening is hot tea and coffee but no fresh cream. No cool beverages after being out all day walking or whatever
You have to pay to park your car... while I was there at least two parties recieved a parking ticket. The meters are 25 cents for 15 minutes...during the day eight am to eight pm.

The fresh pasty at breakfast was terribly under cooked.
They offer fresh cookies in the lobby first come first serve...
I only saw cookies there once in the five days I spent there.

They rate a zero in any special touches always taking the cheap route.
The toliet paper is so thin you can see through it.
The shampoos and soaps are low end.
The owners do not claim to stay on the property.
They should take showers and sleep in the facilities and see how they like them.
There are no covers over the drains for contact lense wearers..
They claim they have free internet but they don't tell you that it is only available in the lobby and not in your room.
It is not located near any of the Battlefields, the Dobbin House, Farnsworth or any other desired activity.

The place is old...I understand that I have stayed in old Inns before ...I love the character and the history of these places...but this was a dump...it was not cherished and cared for. I met no one there who had stayed there previously....wonder why????

I rate it a one out of 10.

Do your research and stay at one of the many inns/bed and breakfasts that are in teh lovely area of Gettysburg, PA.

So sorry these guests did not like our inn. Wish they had said something to us during their 4 day stay so we could have handled some of the issues they complained about, or we could have switched their room.
In response to other claims:
1. We are an 18 room historic bed and breakfast, not a hotel.
2. There are no clocks in our entire inn that chime, or make clicking noises, they are all digital.
3. The mattresses are all new, and beds do not squeak.
4. We have been inspected by the fire marhsall, as all business's are, and have a license to operate, (fire exits, extinguishers etc)
5. A/C unit is a window unit, and makes the same noise all window a/c units make.
6. We have a Keurig coffee machine available 24 hours a day for coffee, tea or hot chocolate. We do not have a fridge in the living room for cream, but do keep cream and milk in our kitchen, which is always available.
7. We stress that we do not have private parking except for our king suites. Meters in all of downtown Gettysburg charge from 8am to 8pm daily. Parking is free 8pm to 8am.
8. Our pastries at breakfast are always cooked to perfection. They are never undercooked. Please read other reviews about our food.
9. Cookies are in the living room from 3pm to at least 6pm every day! If cookies are left after 6pm, we leave them out until they are gone.
10. Toilet paper is Scott tissue, which we use so toilets do not get clocked. Rembember, old house with old plumbing. Soaps and shampoos are high end products bought from Greenwich Bay Trading Co.
11. We, the owners, actually do live on site and are available 24 hours a day. We have slept in all the beds, taken showers etc. and feel very comfortable renting all our rooms to the public.
12. The sink in this bathroom is a hand made potted sink. The drain plug is located under the sink if needed. Could have certainly asked us.
13. Wi-Fi is located in the main living room area and bedrooms in the 1786 house. The signal does not travel to all of our five buildings.
14. We are located in the center of downtown Gettysburg, which is located on the battlfield. All shops, restaurants, tours, cemetery is walking distance. We do not know how we could be any closer.
15. We have been in business for 26 years, and have hosted over 30,000 guests over the last five years. We have a tremendous amount of repeat guests!
Please read other reviews to get a feel of what we are really like. As owners/innkeepers we take great pride in our historic home, and feel this review is a cheap shot.

I stayed for two nights at the Brafferton in for my 5 year college reunion with my boyfriend and another couple. We stayed in the Gettys Suite (two bedrooms, huge kitchen and living room area, and even our own Keurig). We were first given a tour, during which the woman running the inn let me know she had put change in the meter so I didn't get ticketed (talk about service!). There were fresh homemadecookies put out at 3 PM everyday. One of the first questions they asked us is if we had any food allergies. They took into account each of our individual allergies, and during breakfast went around and explained which parts of the meal each of us should enjoy. Not only that, but they made an effort to remember our names. If I could move in, I would. It was a perfect experience
