This is a must see when you visit hyde park. Looking at the structures in the compound, you will go back to the zest and glamorous life of the vanderbilts.

“Beautiful site and worth the visit”
Reviewed 16 November 2013

Fortunately the government shutdown ended before we visited the Hyde Park area. We had been unaware that this site is owned by the federal government and that tours are conducted by the National Park Service. And what a tour it was! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and humorous, and our group agreed that he was one of the best guides on any tour we had ever taken. He provided an interesting history of the building of the mansion and the Vanderbilt family. The mansion itself is located on the Hudson River and set in a beautiful park-like setting. We visited when the leaves of many of the trees had turned gold. We felt like we had entered a fairyland when we passed through the huge metal gates and took the meandering drive towards the visitors center. The interior of the house itself was similar to many gilded age mansions we've seen--over decorated and gloomy, but the setting was magnificent and views of the Hudson were breathtaking. Truly a not to missed site if visiting the Hudson River Valley area.

“A Glimpse into Another Age”
Reviewed 15 November 2013

The tour of the Vanderbilt mansion is so interesting! It's hard to believe that this was the smallest of the many mansions and there is no question that this doesn't have the splendor or awe inspired by the Breakers in Newport. However, it is still an interesting part of New York history and a glimpse into another time!

“A Different National Park”
Reviewed 6 November 2013

We visited Vanderbilt Mansion on a overcast November afternoon but there were still over 20 people in our tour which only runs hourly during Nov. As with any tour of a historical site the guide either makes it interesting or boring. This is our second trip here and once again we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learned new things about the history of the Vanderbilt's. In our day and age it is difficult to image such wealth; We were told that this home was used on in the spring and fall during the week-ends... I was reminded of the quote "Vanity, Vanity, all is vanity.

“Well Worth A Visit”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

This is just one of the many Vanderbilt mansions and "cottages". The National Park guide was great as he took the twelve of us around the main building. It is a great example of the exesses of the Gilded Age. Outside the building you are free to walk the grounds. There are some wonderful views overlooking the Hudson River.
