The Vanderbilt mansion and grounds are quite lovely, with fabulous views of the Hudson River valley. The restored gardens are planted and staffed essentially by volunteers,so check them out to the southern end of grounds. Too bad our cheap skate government has closed the road down to the river at the north end of park. You can walk it, but for many seniors it may be a bit much...uphill for a good 1/4 mile or more. For those who can hike it , they will, find lovely river access and views.
Also the GOOGLE web site incorrectly lists hours and closed days. When the government isn't shut due to sequester, the park operates more or less from 9 am or so until sundown, not the 1-3 p.m only listed on google.

The Natl. Park Service really does a great job of keeping this place beautiful. The inside of the mansion is spectacular and the grounds keeping is equally as nice. We visited early in June and were just a little too early. The flowers in the formal garden were just getting ready to bloom. Well worth a stopover. At only $10.00 for adults it is a real bargain.

The best of all of the glamour palaces built by the wealthy and one in which you could actually live. Take time to walk down to the formal gardens and to view the river from the back of the house.

Fortunately, we live near enough to this beautiful site to visit often..and, we do. The grounds are beautiful and photo worthy regardless of the season. You can tour the inside of the mansion for a fee, but, the grounds are yours to explore for free. It a beautiful park with astonishing views of the Hudson and the mountains. There is a lovely garden down a path that is breathtaking when the flowers are in bloom. A reflecting pool, an arbor and roman type statue make a glorious place to sit and write or think. My dog enjoys the place, as well. The trees are old and interesting and there is a pond with a little bridge. So much to photograph and enjoy..don't even bother going in the house!
