Owner description: This 54-room mansion could be considered modest for a Vanderbilt.

Only a 50 minute tour. But the park ranger spoke clearly and was informative. She did not take us into the various rooms but instead let us wander on our own. I would have prefered more attention to the individual rooms rather than an overview. She did answer all questions with good stories. The italian garden was fair

53 rooms and a 1 hr tour for this, the most "modest" of all the Vanderbilt mansions built between Newport and N.Carolina etc.

Grounds are beautiful and very walkable. Gardens are still maintained on the grounds as well.

This is the smallest of the Vanderbilt Mansions but it is also less costly to tour than others I have toured. The story here is presented in a way that is not just about the Vanderbilt's but about many mansions built in the area and why. The National Park Service owns this mansion and the tours are guided by a ranger. Much of the furnishings are original unlike many of the others. The story is interesting and takes about an hour from the time the tour begins.

The Vanderbilt mansion and grounds are quite lovely, with fabulous views of the Hudson River valley. The restored gardens are planted and staffed essentially by volunteers,so check them out to the southern end of grounds. Too bad our cheap skate government has closed the road down to the river at the north end of park. You can walk it, but for many seniors it may be a bit much...uphill for a good 1/4 mile or more. For those who can hike it , they will, find lovely river access and views.
Also the GOOGLE web site incorrectly lists hours and closed days. When the government isn't shut due to sequester, the park operates more or less from 9 am or so until sundown, not the 1-3 p.m only listed on google.

The Natl. Park Service really does a great job of keeping this place beautiful. The inside of the mansion is spectacular and the grounds keeping is equally as nice. We visited early in June and were just a little too early. The flowers in the formal garden were just getting ready to bloom. Well worth a stopover. At only $10.00 for adults it is a real bargain.
