See how the the super super rich lived. Take the tour. The home is amazing and the family had many homes larger and more opulent.

We had a guided tour of the mansion on a bus tour of the Hudson Valley gardens. An impressive home overlooking the Hudson River and a massive estate with a good garden in August. Very impressed with all the money the Vanderbilts gave away. These people had the wisdom to give their homes to the national trust so we can see the home pretty much intacted. Make sure you look for the orrery(s), (ies) in the room to the right of the Entrance Hall. Only pair in the world in this condition! Good gift shop.

For 10 dollars you will get an hour + tour and learn all about Frederick Vanderbilt- the most "frugal" of the Vanderbilts of his time! Needless to say, the house is gorgeous and almost left exactly as the day he left the house. Our tour guide (Dimitri) was EXCELLENT! So knowledgeable and funny. He really made the tour. We really enjoyed everything about the tour and really felt like we learned something about that time period and of course, the Vanderbilts. Grounds are full of mature trees and it is right on the Hudson. No reservations needed and of course a cute gift shop!

The Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY is truly impressive with amazing art, wonderful architectural details, lovely landscaping and gorgeous views of the Hudson Valley. The National Park Service guides do a great job of explaining the history and economics behind the Gilded Age conspicuous consumption embodied in mansions like these and are glad to answer visitors' questions. We saw the mansion third after FDR's home and Eleanor's cottage -- that's a good order to see them in. Daddy Warbucks had nothing on the Vanderbilts.

The Vanderbilt Mansion in the Hyde Park area is one of the many fascinating sites worth viaiting in the spectacular Hudson Valley. The still expansive grounds and gardens, which can be seen free of charge, are in themselves worth a visit for the beauty of their location overlooking the Hudson River. And for a mere $10 you can also have an hour-long tour of the house conducted by one of the very informed guides of the Historic Sites National Park Service. While displaying all the excess of gilded age turn-of-the-century opulence -- and therefore of somewhat questionable taste relative to the nearby much more restrained and historically significant Roosevelt house -- it is still well worth seeing.
